Mumbai: As India celebrates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and also of the country's ambitious cleanliness drive, actor Amitabh Bachchan said the key to solving problem of sanitation was individual responsibility.

"It's wonderful to have this festival or event on Gandhi Jayanti. If we can just take the responsibility of cleaning 10 yards of where we live, in a sense we can clean up the entire city. It's a very simple thing but if we work at it, we can go a long way," Mr Bachchan said.

The 73-year-old actor was speaking at the NDTV-Dettol Banega Swachh India Campaign on October 2 on the Juhu beach in Mumbai.

Recalling his history with the Juhu beach, the actor said, "There have been many incidents when I have been on the beach. In times to come, there will be people who will keep coming with tractors. It looks a lot cleaner now. However, it's the end of the monsoon so the water is supposed to be muddy."

The Government of India has zeroed in on 10 iconic places to for the clean-up drive including Taj Mahal, Vaishno Devi temple and Ajmer Sharif for converting them into examples of cleanliness. Commenting on the initiative, Mr Bachchan said, "These iconic places are the most visited by tourists, so it's a good thing to keep them clean. This initiative is to create an impression. So, clean up places and send a message across the country."

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is in its third year now and aims at a cleaner India, a better India.
