Amitabh Bachchan Jukebox: 5 Songs He Sang, From Rang Barse to Ekla Cholo Re

A still of Amitabh Bachchan singing Rang Barse from Silsila

New Delhi:

Actor Amitabh Bachchan's baritone forms the centrepiece of his newest film Shamitabh. Not only is it practically a character by itself, Mr Bachchan's voice has also been employed in the song Piddly. The actor is one of a handful who have built a secondary career singing playback. Here are five of our favourite songs sung by Amitabh Bachchan:

Rang Barse from Silsila (1981)

The Holi-themed song is probably Mr Bachchan's best-known. The lyrics were written by his father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan co-starred with Rekha, Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar in the film directed by Yash Chopra. The music of Silsila was and still is a big hit.

Neela Aasman from Silsila

Also from Silsila, Mr Bachchan sang the male version of this romantic ballad written by Javed Akhtar and composed by Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hari Prasad Chaurasia.

Mere Angne Mein from Laawaris (1981)

Director Prakash Mehra's blockbuster hit included Amitabh Bachchan in drag singing the rib-tickling Mere Angne Mein. Again, there was a male and female version sung by Alka Yagnik. The lyrics were written by Anjaan and the song was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Mere Paas Aao Mere Doston from Mr Natwarlal (1979)

This was the first song sung by Amitabh Bachchan in a movie. It featured him breaking the ice with a group of children in a village where he was an outsider. Music and lyrics by Rajesh Roshan and Anand Bakshi.

Ekla Cholo Re from Kahaani (2012)

Mr Bachchan sang Rabindranath Tagore's Ekla Cholo Re with moderately good Bengali pronunciation - he's married to a Bengali and lived in Kolkata before becoming an actor - for Vidya Balan's Kahaani.
