Anurag Kashyap Says Ugly is His Most Accomplished Film Ever

Anurag Kashyap's Ugly will release on December 26.

New Delhi: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap kept his date for a Christmas release this year, with Ugly, which hits theaters on December 26.

Calling it his most accomplished film ever, Anurag Kashyap has written and directed Ugly. He says, "It's about the ugliness in each one of us that's simmering and waiting to emerge. It's about one kidnapping and then goes to address trafficking and relationships. I have drawn from my life and from my friend's as well."

But Ugly has also been in the news for the filmmaker locking horns with the health ministry on the no smoking disclaimer. He may have lost his fight to have it removed but Anurag makes no bones about his disgust for it. "We all know smoking is bad, but how is putting that ugly disclaimer and showing that horrendous film going to help the cause. Have a law and we will abide it but to have something as ridiculous as that in the middle of a film is just bizarre but you can't do anything. Exercise self-censorship, yes you blame all ills in society on films but a lot more is being seen and shown. I want us to have objectivity and a balanced point of view."

The filmmaker is particularly impressed by Gen Next's approach to cinema and their craft and was all praises for his Bombay Velvet team, actors Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.

The delay was anticipated. "It's a huge film requires work and we will complete it by March," he said.

Filmmaker Karan Johar also features in his film in a negative role. When asked what it was like directing another director, Anurag said, "Karan didn't come to the set as a director he came as an actor and I was impressed."

Lastly, as the year draws to a close, the director gave his stamp of approval to actor Shahid Kapoor whose turn as Haider was the performance of the year. Talking about Aamir Khan's recently released film PK, he says that the film is Aamir's best till date.

He also said that the ladies - Kangana Ranaut in Queen, Priyanka Chopra in Mary Kom, Alia Bhatt in Highway and Tabu in Haider - were hard to ignore.

Titli is the film which impressed Anurag the most and he added that 2015 will bring some good cinema too.
