Highlights
- Everyone's talking about Mary Kom who is about to bring India a fourth Olympic medal this year. That includes the Twitter-happy Amitabh Bachchan and Shahid Kapoor who neglected to do a Google search and spell check respectively before putting their thoughts on the micro-blogging site.
- Amitabh Bachchan, who’s been tweeting and blogging extensively about the London Games, started today with this tweet:
- T 828 - Mary Kom !! wins her boxing bout, insured a Bronze ! What a story ! A Mother of two from Assam, creates moment of pride for India !!
- That was a Big oops moment. 29 year old Magnificent Mary, as Ms Kom is popularly called, is indeed a mother of two but she’s from Manipur and not Assam.
- Mr Bachchan corrected himself an hour later:
- T 828 - Sorry correction : Mary Kom is from Manipur, not Assam .. apologies !!
- And how about Shahid Kapoor, yesterday’s hot Twitter trend for misspelling Mary Kom’s name in a tweet:
- Shahid Kapoor @shahidkapoor
- Bust them up marycom ............ U r indias million dollar baby .......
- A mistake that was quite rudely pointed out to him by a number of followers, and made him the butt of a spate of online jokes.
- Unfazed, he corrected himself. And then tweeted, after Mary Kom roundly defeated her quarterfinal opponent, Tunisia’s Maroua Rahali:
- Shahid Kapoor @shahidkapoor
- Mari kom wins :) ..... That's being the point guys not the typos .... #goteamindia
- Except, he didn’t get it right this time either. Mary, Shahid. Not Mari.
- And Mary Kom will at least have an Olympic medal to make up for having her name misspelled by a celebrity, but poor Vijender Singh won’t. The boxer, who lost his bid for a bronze this morning, also suffered from a celebrity alphabet swap:
- T 828 - Well fought Vijendra ! You have done the country and all of us proud ..
- Yes, Mr bachchan did correct himself. Again.
- T 828 - Correction : VIJENDER and not vijendra
