London: British teenage model Amy Jackson is set to be the next big star in south India.

The 18-year old Liverpool native was spotted by an Indian director whilst she was on the shortlist for Miss England, who then cast her in his Tamil film Madrasapattinam.

"I got a phone call from my agency at half seven in the morning saying, I've been "contacted by an Indian director, don't get your hopes up just yet but he wants to meet you and cast you for his movie. I never thought it would be a career path,'' says Amy.

'' I was always focussed on the modelling, and succeeding in that, but now I'm completely focussed on making it over in India in the movies, Jackson said.

The film, a romantic period drama set in 1947 Madras (now Chennai), premiered in the UK at Jackson's local cinema in Woolton, Merseyside on Sunday.

"I enjoyed it thoroughly. I've seen it once over in India but to have all my friends and family around, it was something different. I appreciated all their support, it was fantastic," the actress said about the local premiere.

Jackson plays Amy Wilkinson, the daughter of the Madras Presidency Governor, who falls in love with a young man from the Dhobi caste.

Tamil heartthrob Arya stars as her love interest Parithi.

The film, which was released in India on July 9 has been well received in India making Amy into a household name.

"Last week we went over for a tour of south India to visit the cinemas and see the response from the public and it was amazing. There were like three thousand, four thousand fans waiting outside at each one, it was like getting mobbed but it was brilliant. I mean I've never experienced anything like that, she said.

Amy is set to compete in the finals for Miss England 2010 which will be held at the end of the month.
