In Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, director Dibakar Banerjee has vowed to make his version of the classic Bengali Sherlock anything but ordinary. It's not just the dhoti-clad Byomkesh, played by actor Sushant Singh Rajput, that the director sketches out in loving detail, he's also devoted time and effort to the rest of the cast - Ajit, who is Byomkesh's friend and Watson; Satyawati, his love interest; Anguri Devi, the femme fatale who almost does him in; and a mysterious, masked arch-nemesis. In the first trailer, we met Anguri Devi, played by Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee as equal parts vulnerable and dangerous. In the just-released second trailer of the film, the focus shifts to the villain, who by the way is not played by Aamir Khan. In fact, we're not entirely sure who plays this shadowy Moriarty.
What we do get to know about this villain is that he intends to change the face of colonial Calcutta (of 1943), which is lousy with his henchmen and drug racketeers. What starts as a simple case of finding a missing person, turns into a complex web of crime spun at least partly by the Green Gang, Shanghai's dreaded crime syndicate. In the middle of the web, like a spider overfed on evil, lurks Byomkesh's nemesis, just like the elusive Moriarty of the Sherlock stories.
Instead of high-octane action sequences, the focus of the trailer is the sinister atmosphere of foreboding that grips Calcutta. Trouble waits in every bylane, around each corner.
The film, which is the latest in a series of cinematic renditions of Bengali author Sharadindu Bandopadhyay's detective series, also stars Anand Tiwari, Divya Menon, Meiyang Chang and Neeraj Kabi.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is scheduled to release on April 3.
