Actor Salman Khan Sentenced to 5 Years in Hit-and-Run Case

New Delhi: Salman Khan was on Wednesday convicted in a 13-year-old hit and run case and sentenced to five years in jail. A court in Mumbai held him guilty of running over people sleeping on the pavement with his SUV on September 28, 2002. The actor has been granted two days interim bail till May 8 by the Bombay High Court.

He has also been found guilty of endangering the life and personal safety of others, drunk driving, not informing the police and leaving the spot after the accident.

He is also accused of failing to report an accident involving his vehicle.

The charges carry punishment ranging from six months to up to 10 years in jail.

Salman Khan had told the court that his driver Ashok Singh was driving the car at the time of the accident. But the court said, "You were driving the car." (Also Read - Salman Khan Convicted in Hit-and-Run: Rs 200 Crores Riding on Actor)

The prosecution presented 27 witnesses including the actor's bodyguard, the bar staff, policemen and a parking attendant.
