Panaji: Director Anurag Basu feels theongoing debate on intolerance and artistes returning theirawards just proves that the film industry is 'leftist' like ithas always been.

The Barfi! director said people in the film industryhas always raised its voice against the establishment.

"As a film fraternity we are a little leftist, we arealways against the establishment. The artists have alwaysprotested. It has always been there but it is being discussedmore," Mr Basu told PTI here.

The filmmaker said the growing protest also showed thatthere was 'freedom of expression' in the country.

"I think they don't hesitate (to protest) and that meansthere is freedom of expression. You can't do this in any othercountry, the way people are returning awards. The fact that weare having this debate is itself very positive."

On the extreme censorship in the country, Anurag Basu said hehad neither experienced any extreme issue with the censorboard.

"To be very frank I have not heard anybody throttling myvoice or my colleagues' voice. Nobody has told us 'don't dothis because the film censor will not like it.' From the filmindustry's point of view, I don't think we have to react becausenothing has happened yet," the director said.
