Film On Khap Panchayat To Release In July

Highlights

  • Raising the issue of honour killings on the silver screen, Khap, a film starring Om Puri and newbie actress Yuvika Choudhary, is all set to hit theatres on July 29.
  • The film seeks to portray how Khap Panchayats, a system of social administration prevalent mostly in villages of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, adopt extreme ends to prevent marriages within the same 'gotra', often resulting in multiple deaths.
  • The issue has been in news lately and 'Khap' borrows from the numerous cases reported in the newspapers.
  • "The Supreme Court has announced that Khap panchayat is illegal and it is inhuman to kill young children in the name of false honor. The film questions the tradition of Khap. Such a hard hitting subject is narrated in a very entertaining manner," said Om Puri.
  • The film also stars actors Govind Namdev, Manoj Pahwa, Anooradha Patel and Mohnish Behl and is directed by Ajai Sinha.
  • "We live in cosmopolitan cities so we don't realize the mayhem caused by the Khap Panchayats. The film takes you back to rules which require correction. I play Om Puri's son in the film, which shows how we both have conflict of interests and the father-son relationship is broken down by the Khap system," said Behl.
