However, figures from Box Office India place the weekend collections at Rs 97 crores, just short of the 100 mark.

"We are thrilled that after 'Chennai Express' had set a new record in 2013, 'Happy New Year' has set another new benchmark. We are grateful for the ongoing love and support of audience," said Venky Mysore, CEO of RCE.

Gaurav Verma, chief revenue officer, RCE, said: "We are thankful to all our partners, exhibitors and especially YRF (Yash Raj Films) for helping us achieve this significant milestone."

Happy New Year has already broken opening day records set by superstars Aamir and Salman Khan's film by raking in Rs 45 crores on day one, October 24.

The film also stars Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah as a group of 'losers' who enter a dance competition but actually intend to rob a bank of diamonds.

Happy New Year is directed by Farah Khan, who previously directed Shah Rukh in Main Hoon Na and both SRK and Deepika in Om Shanti Om.
