For Shah Rukh Khan, Diwali Has Almost Always Brought a Blockbuster

For the last 20 odd years, Diwali has often meant fireworks at the box office in the form of a Shah Rukh Khan movie. Successive Diwalis have brought him rich dividends, just as Eid has proved lucky for Salman Khan.

This Diwali offering from SRK is Happy New Year, co-starring Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bacchchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah.

Here are nine other films starring SRK that released around Diwali and became runaway hits.

Baazigar, November 12, 1993: For Shah Rukh Khan, it all started with his breakthrough film, Abbas-Mustan's thriller Baazigar which released on Diwali day in 1993. Co-starring Kajol, the movie became a huge hit and SRK's graph was firmly northbound.
 



Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, October 19, 1995: A Diwali release proved second time lucky for SRK with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Co-starring Kajol again, the movie became one of Bollywood's biggest blockbusters ever and SRK - the romantic hero - was born and here to stay.





Dil To Pagal Hai, October 31, 1997: Another Diwali, another hit for SRK in the form of Yash Chopra's musical-drama Dil To Pagal Hai. Giving SRK company this time were Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapur.





Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, October 16, 1998: And by now it was only natural that come Diwali, it was time for another SRK film. This time, director Karan Johar's debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The result: yet another blockbuster for SRK and Kajol.



Mohabbatein, October 27, 2000: 2000 was a happy Diwali for Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in Yash Chopra's Mohabbatein also starring Aishwarya Rai. The movie opened well and was declared a hit.





Veer Zara, November 12, 2004: SRK was back to ruling Diwali week with another Yash Chopra movie Veer-Zaara , also starring Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji.





Don, October 20, 2006: The Chase Begins Again, 2006: SRK reprised Amitabh Bachchan's Don role in Farhan Akhtar's remake. The movie was a hit.



Om Shanti Om, October 20, 2006: SRK continued his winning streak by releasing his home production Om Shanti Om on Diwali. This proved to be yet another hit in the actor's kitty.
 



Jab Tak Hai Jaan, November 13, 2012: SRK gave us another explosive hit with Jab Tak Hai Jaan, also co-starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. On another note the movie proved to be the last film Yash Chopra, who SRK considers his mentor, directed.
