In Sushant Singh Rajput's Byomkesh Bakshy, a Femme Who Could Well be Fatale

A still from Detective Byomksh Bakshy.

New Delhi:

The teaser of Dibakar Banerjee's Detective Byomksh Bakshy gave us a brief but tantalizing montage of blood-spattered streets, a mystery woman and the most fleeting of glimpses of a dhoti-clad sleuth. Now, in the first proper trailer of the film, Sushant Singh Rajput stalks the bylanes of colonial Calcutta as Byomkesh Bakshy, detective. He's investigating his first case - it could turn out to be his last.

As the fictional Byomkesh, Sushant is called upon to help find a man who's disappeared - and who the detective insists has been murdered. As he chases a deadly trail of clues, he tangles with the mystery woman from the teaser. Bengali star Swastika Mukherjee plays a red-lipped seductress in what could be her Bollywood breakthrough. She smokes, dives into the Hooghly, and sashays through 1943's Calcutta in the sinister wake of the Green Gang, Shanghai's dreaded crime syndicate.

The film is the latest in a series of cinematic renditions of Bengali author Sharadindu Bandopadhyay's detective series - the last film in a Bengali trilogy just released and Byomkesh also appears in a Bengali TV series.

Dibakar Banerjee's gritty take on the classic tale also stars Anand Tiwari, Divya Menon, Meiyang Chang and Neeraj Kabi.

All will be revealed on April 3, which is when the film releases.
