  • The film tackles the issue of drug menace in Punjab
New Delhi: A tweet from Alia Bhatt posted on Wednesday morning has us scratching our heads. Could it be an oblique response to a recent open letter addressed to her about her role in Udta Punjab? Or could it simply be a platonic repost of a sentiment she agrees with?

We'll let you decide:

Alia, 23, plays a Bihari migrant in the Abhishek Chaubey-directed film, which tackles the drug menace in Punjab. An open letter, which first appeared on newsable.asianetnews.tv after the trailer of Udta Punjab released on April 16, dismisses the actress' character as "nothing but a concoction of stereotypes." "Do you really think all Biharis are poor and look like this?," asked the writer of the letter, self-described as a 'bonafide Bihari girl.'

Opinions may differ on Alia's 'bonafides' in the film but the trailer of Udta Punjab and its cast - Alia, Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh - has been warmly welcomed by Bollywood colleagues.
