New Delhi: Kalki Koechlin's next film A Death In The Gunj releases on Friday. She was keen on getting a role in Konkana Sen Sharma's directorial debut film. Kalki told NDTV.com, "I wanted to do this because it's Konkana's first film as a director. I had to work hard for it, I did an audition, and she gave me feedback. So it's not like I called her and landed up this role." Konkana was looking for someone who would play the role of a middle-aged woman. Speaking about her role, Kalki said, "I play Mimi who is an older woman. She likes a stiff drink, she loves smoking cigarettes, and she is always attracting the wrong kind of attention from men." Konkana has handled this role of a bold woman with care and sensitivity, Kalki added, "Perspective of a role like this can be different from person to person and the gaze can be different if it's man is behind the camera."

Kalki who hardly does commercial films has always got good reviews for playing her part in the few that she has done. Be it her role in Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, critics' and her fans have appreciated her performance. She feels it's because of her image she doesn't get that many commercial roles. "People have an impression about me. Even before offering a film, they will be like, Oh! Kalki will say no to this! So they don't even come to me with some kind of scripts. I think it's the image they have of me."

A Death in the Gunj releases on June 2, 2017.
