Kolkata gets bridal fashion week

Kolkata gets bridal fashion week

Highlights

  • After the third edition of the Kolkata Fashion Week (KFW) was cancelled earlier this year due to a feud between the organisers, the city of joy is gearing up to host its first bridal-wear week next month.
  • With participation from some of the top-notch designers like Neeta Lulla and Vikram Phadnis, the four-day 'Kolkata Couture Fashion Week' showcasing exclusive bridal collections will be held from September 9.
  • "With the wedding and festive season just around the corner, the time is ripe to hold such an event which will offer exquisite attire for all kinds of wedding Bengali, Marwari, Muslim, Punjabi, Sindhi and South Indian weddings," Vivek Agarwal, chief events coordinator of Idea Weavers, the organizers of the extravaganza told PTI today.
  • Earlier, a rift between Yudhajit Dutta and Prateek Sen, erstwhile partners of Mindscapes Maestros Events & Sports Management, which organized two back to back editions of the KFW last year, ensured a subsequent cancellation of the fashion blitzkrieg.
  • "This made sure that we have an open field left for us to enter the market. But we have a very focused approach towards fashion and therefore, we are concentrating solely on bridal wear," Agarwal said adding that the city wedding trousseau market attracts buyers from all over the country.
  • Adding a twist to the fashion extravaganza would be professional sari draper Dolly Jain, who was recently awarded by the Limca Book of Records for draping a sari in 125 variations.
  • "The young generation keeps complaining that saris are too heavy to be worn and they can't carry it properly. Through the ramp walks, I will try to show how heavy saris can be worn in a way which is very easy and comfortable," she said.
  • The organisers have also roped in international choreographer John Wolford, who works for the London Fashion Week.
  • A host of Bollywood celebrities are also expected to sashay down the ramp as showstoppers for designers which also include big names like Anju Modi and Archana Kocchar.
  • "We will make this event an annual one," the organsier said adding that the event was named couture week since the term couture is synonymous with bridal-wear in India.
