Lata Mangeshkar, Big B mourn ghazal singer Mehdi Hassan's death

  • She tweeted: "aaj bohot bade ghazal gayak kalaakar mehedi hassan sahab hamare bich nahi rahe,mujhe is baat bohot dukh hai,gazal gaayki ke kshetra mein unhone bohot bada parivartan laaya,aaj gazal unke jaane se ghazal ki bohot nadi haani hui hai, ab un jaisa kalakar phir se aana mushkil hai,wo bohot bade shastriya sangeet ke gayak bhi the,aur unke gaane me rajasthan ke sangeet ki khushboo bhi thi,unhone mere liye kuch gaane banaaye the, unme se hi ek ghazal maine jo unhone mujhe gaake bheji thi, uska maine duet karke record kiya tha,un ke saath mera ye ek hi gaana hai, main ishwar se prarthana karti hun, ki mehedi sahab ki aatma ko woh shaanti pradan karein."

  • Ms Mangeshkar dueted with the late Mr Hassan in 2010. The song, Tera Milna, was recorded in two countries. Mr Hassan recorded his part in Pakistan and Ms Mangeshkar hers in India.
  • Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has also mourned the death of Mr Hassan and said the era of soulful ghazal singing has come to an end.
  • "Deeply pained to learn of the passing away of Mehdi Hassan in Pakistan... a vocalist of immense fame and unique sonorous voice," Amitabh tweeted.
  • "Mehdi Hassan, an entire era of soulful ghazal singing gone... now left with beautiful memories and personal meetings with him," he added.
  • Recalling his meeting with Mr Hassan, Big B wrote: "Mehdi Hassan once told me, he came from humble beginnings, and used to train and sing to the tone of the tractor sound in the fields."
