After Sridevi, another leading lady in her time, Padmini Kolhapure, is making a comeback to the silver screen. Though she has not entirely distanced herself from the arc lights and grease paint, the popular heroine has kept herself away from Bollywood's madness.
Padmini Kolhapure gave an award winning performance in the Marathi film Chimnee Pakhare in 2006, and was recently seen in the Marathi television serial Maee .
But now the well-known heroine of the eighties is headed for a bigger and better role in Hindi cinema, in Raj Kumar Santoshi's Phata Poster Nikla Hero. It is the same film that will reportedly star Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz.
Padmini will play Shahid's mother in the new movie, we hear. So what is the big deal about the mom role?
Well, the director insists that Phata Poster Nikla Hero is not a funny romance like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, as people suspect. The film is intrinsically an intense story about a mother and son, intertwined with light moments punctuating the plot.
The last onscreen mother we really liked was Imran Khan's super cool mom played by Ratna Pathak Shah in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa. Gone are the days of weeping Nirupa Roys and conniving Aruna Iranis. It's time to raise the standards of mommies in B-town.
