Past, present and future stars at the Ambani party

Past, present and future stars at the Ambani party

Highlights

  • It was a gathering of the starriest sort at the Nita and Mukesh Ambani hosted party in honour of designers’ Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s 25th year in fashion. Abu-Sandeep, who are the favoured designers of many of Bollywood’s rich and powerful (the Bachchans!), also released their new book India Fantastique at the party.
  • And while the focus may have been on fashion, it was also an evening when new power alliances were forged and some possible future stars were introduced.
  • A much younger Amitabh Bachchan famously kept the company of the other Ambani brother, Mukesh’s once estranged younger sibling Anil. That was when the Angry Young Man formed a threesome of sorts with Amar Singh and Anil Ambani – a powerful triumvirate of Bollywood, business and politics. But on the night of August 18, it was the elder Ambani who played host to the Bachchans, long after the old friendship between his brother and Big B became a closed chapter.
  • And while the Bachchans were very much the guests of honour, with all eyes on working mum Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, there were other, younger faces that grabbed attention among the sea of older and more famous ones.
  • The evening belonged, in part, to two young ladies. 16-year-old Sara Ali Khan, daughter of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, made her solo showbiz debut, showcasing an Abu-Sandeep creation. Cheered on by her mother, Sara was confident and poised as she walked down the imposing staircase that served as a ramp. Sara became the focus of interest in Bollywood circles after she posed on the cover of Hello! magazine with her mother and was just recently rumoured to have signed a Yash Raj film. Turns out that it is mother Amrita Singh who’s landed the film, not her young daughter, and chances are Sara will choose to attend university in the US rather than try her luck under the arclights.
  • Just like the other young lady who stole much other evening’s spotlight, Nita and Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha. Isha, currently a student at Yale University, played mistress of ceremonies for the evening, a role she’s already had some practice at when she introduced Shah Rukh Khan, this year’s Yale Fellow, at her university in April.
  • With the old guard and the new guard in attendance, the India Fantastique party more than lived up to it’s name.
