Sajid Khan: Mindless, Loony Comedies Are Not For Everyone

The director assures critics that he is not at all upset with them

Highlights

  • Director Sajid Khan is really happy right now. His latest release Humshakals has made over Rs 76 crores at the box-office worldwide and Sajid says, “I am just very happy that the film has done extremely well at the box-office. The box-office success proves that people have enjoyed the film.”
  • Sajid admits that critics have hated Humshakals but has an explanation. He says, “ There is a large section of the audience, especially my ‘critic’ friends who have not liked the film. But then mindless, loony comedies are not for everyone. They are just for kids and families to enjoy.”
  • “ I do not why the critics don’t like my work. I guess I do not make films that they like. Earlier, I used to say ‘critics don’t matter’ but that’s not the case. It’s just that the kind of films I endorse, I believe (in) and brings is good results at the box-office is not something they seem to enjoy,” Sajid says.
  • “I don’t think I can create films just for critics. It’s just not me. May be one day I could make a film which works at the box-office and the critics also like it,” he added.
  • Sajid says almost every Bollywood film is potentially ‘senseless.’ “The moment any film has song and dance sequences - where any time any character can start singing and dancing without any explanation – it can turn into a senseless film. You cannot review it anymore. They are sometimes singing without mics, we have no idea who is playing the music and sometimes they are playing electric guitars without wires. In the case of comedies we have to go further over-the-top,” he says.
  • Sajid also says that his comedies have humour for everyone - for children, for fans of the actors featured in films, some jokes for the masses and some for the classes - and not everyone may enjoy his films. The director says that he is not upset with critics at all and hopes that Humshakals grosses Rs 100 crores soon.
