Salman Khan Hit-and-Run: Doctor Details His Examination of Actor

Salman Khan is being tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder

Mumbai:

The doctor who collected blood samples from actor Salman Khan after the hit-and-run case in 2002 told a Mumbai court today that he had smelt alcohol on Mr Khan's breath. When cross-examined, however, he said that the 'case paper' which documents clinical details only mentions that the actor's breath smelled, without specifying that it smelt of alcohol.

A clinical examination showed that Salman Khan was not drunk, the doctor told the court. The nature of the 'clinical examination' was not specified.

The doctor also told the court that the actor's pupils were slightly dilated but his gait was normal and speech coherent. He said, under cross-examination, that pupils could be dilated because of many reasons, including a lack of sleep.

The doctor also told the court that he asked Mr Khan if he had been drinking and the actor said he hadn't.

The doctor, who was the medical examiner in Mumbai's JJ Hospital when Mr Khan was brought in for examination after the hit-and-run, told the court that he had taken blood samples from the actor, with his consent. He gave the court a detailed breakdown of the process by which the blood samples were taken.

In December, a forensic expert testified that he had found traces of alcohol in the blood sample sent to him in 2002. He told the court that he had found 62 mg of ethyl alcohol in the blood sample of 100 ml. He said that 30 mg of ethyl alcohol is the permissible limit while driving - any more found means you are driving drunk - but also said that it can increase to 45 mg because of medical treatment.

One person was killed and four others were injured when a car, allegedly driven by the actor, rammed into a bakery in suburban Bandra in Mumbai on September 28, 2002.

For years, his lawyers have argued that Mr Khan was not driving the car. The prosecution alleges that he was, and have called at least two witnesses in the ongoing trial to prove that the actor was at the wheel.

A hotel parking attendant told the court that he had seen Mr Khan sit in the driver's seat but had not seen him drive off and another witness testified last May, claiming that the actor had exited the car from the right side.

Mr Khan is being tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If convicted, he could spend upto 10 years in prison.
