New Delhi: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan will star in and as Sultan on Eid 2016, Yash Raj Films has confirmed on microblogging site Twitter.

The announcement, preceded by a countdown of tweets, was in the form of a 30-second audio clip which transports the listeners to a wrestling match, all set to start, and features "Haryana ki shaan, Haryana ki jaan" Sultan Ali Khan.

In the film, Sultan's motto is: "Wrestling is not a sport, it's about fighting what lies within." This is the 49-year-old actor's second film with Yash Raj after 2013 blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger. Parineeti Chopra's name has been bandied about as the female lead for Sultan, though no official announcement has been made.

Sultan begins shooting a few months later, as trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweets:

2016 may see two Khans playing wrestlers. While Salman's Sultan occupies the Eid slot, Aamir Khan's film on former wrestler Mahavir Phogat may release during his favoured Christmas week. Aamir's Dangal is biographical while Salman's Sultan is a work of fiction but chances are that comparisons will be drawn. But while Aamir is now 98 kgs in preparation of the role, we don't quite see Salman Khan doing the same considering he also has brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri's next lined up for the same year. Both Khans are also believed to be playing their age - or close to their age. Aamir will play both the older and younger versions of Mahavir Phogat, who is the father of four daughters including celebrated wrestlers Geeta and Babita; Salman's character is believed to be 40 plus as well.

Salman's Sultan might end up competing with Shah Rrukh Khan's Raees. However, that still remains a rumour, considering YRF and SRK are on great terms with each other and would not want to eat into each other's profits. As we see it, it's going to be Salman on Eid, SRK on Diwali and Aamir on Christmas. Wonder what'll happen to the rest of the lot.

This year, Salman Khan is gearing up for the release of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film will release on the Eid weekend beginning July 17. He will also be seen in Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with Sonam Kapoor later this year.
