Highlights

  • The first batch of this year's Padma honours were handed out by President Pranab Mukherjee. Actresses Sharmila Tagore and Sridevi received their Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri respectively. Cricketer Rahul Dravid received the Padma Bhushan.
  • Sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra and researcher Yash Pal received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award.
  • Telugu producer D Ramanaidu received the Padma Bhushan.
  • Theatre personality B Jayashree, boxer Dingko Singh, photographer Pablo Bartholomew, Subedar Major Bajrang Lal Takhar and entrepreneur Vandana Luthra received the Padma Shri.
  • Actor Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore's co-star of many hit films, and comedian Jaspal Bhatti will both receive the Padma Bhushan posthumously in the next batch of awards. Mr Khanna died in July and Mr Bhatti in October last year.
  • Boxer Mary Kom and industrialist Adi Godrej will also be receiving the Padma Bhushan.
  • Sholay director Ramesh Sippy, actor Nana Patekar, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and shooter Vijay Kumar will receive the Padma Shri.
  • The ten recipients of Padma Bhushan included Hemendra Singh Panwar, Shivajirao Girdhar Patil, Kanak Yatindra Rele, Prof Ashoke Sen, Prof Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Ramamurthy Thyagarajan.
  • The 42 people honoured with Padma Shri included Avnita Abbi, Sudarshan Kumar Aggarwal, Mohammad Sharfe Alam, Gajam Anjaiah, Rajendra Achyut Badwe, Memendra Prasad Barooah, G C D Bharti, Ravindra Singh Bisht, Avinash Chander, Taraprasad Das, Trichur Viswanathan Devarajan, Sanjay Govind Dhande, Saroj Chooramani Gopal, Noboru Karashima from Japan, Ram Krishan (posthumous), Salik Lakhnawi (posthumous) and Manju Bharat Ram (posthumous).
  • S Lakshminarayana 'Bapu', Vandana Luthra, S K M Maeilanandhan, Kailash Chandra Meher, Neelima Chandrashekhar Mishra, P Madhavan Nair, Sankar Kumar Pal, Brahmdeo Ram Pandit, Rajshree Pathy, Deepak Bhaskar Phatak, Mudundi Ramakrishna Raju, C Venkata S Ram, R Nageshwar Rao, Surender Sharma, Jaymala Jayram Shiledar, Rama Kant Shukla, Ajay Kumar Sood, Pt Suresh Talwalkar, Rajendar Kumar Tiku and Akhtarul Wasey also received Padma Shri.
  • The list of honours were announced on January 25 and another ceremony is expected later for presentation of the awards to the remaining recipients. The selection committee this year included actress Ratna Pathak Shah, scientist Anil Kakodkar and Union Home Secretary RK Singh, among others.
