Bollywood's long wait for a certain famous Bengali sleuth ends today with Dibakar Banerjee's adventure film
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! arriving at the box office.
Set in 1943 Calcutta, the film stars Sushant Singh Rajput as a private eye solving his very first case in the dark and dangerous bylanes of the city. What starts as a simple case of finding a missing person, turns into a complex web of crime spun by a dreaded crime syndicate.
In Sushant's own words, "An ordinary boy saves the country from an extraordinary plan in an unexpected way."
Actor Anand Tiwari plays Ajay, who becomes Byomkesh's Watson, while actress Divya Menon plays his love interest, Satyawati. There's also a femme fatale, Anguri Devi, played by Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee, and a mysterious masked Moriarty.
The cast also includes actors Neeraj Kabi, Aryann Bhowmik and singer Meiyang Chang.
Action fans have
Furious 7, the seventh installment in the
Fast & Furious film series, which released yesterday. The film marks the final appearance of Paul Walker, who was killed in a car crash in November, 2013. Besides Mr Walker, Hollywood stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez form a part of the returning cast while action heroes Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa and Ronda Rousey are the new members. The film also marks the Hollywood debut of Indian actor Ali Fazal.
Picking up from where the last instalment left off, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family for the death of his brother, Owen, who was defeated in the previous film.
The romantic comedy
Paisa Ho Paisa, directed by Mukhta Sunder, also hits theatres today. A college romance, the movie features actors Dhruv Bhandari, Madalasa Shah and Kanishka Soni in key roles.
