Vidya Balan receives her Best Actress National Award

  • Bollywood star Vidya Balan collected her first Best Actress National Award for The Dirty Picture in New Delhi today. She received the Rajat Kamal from Vice President Hamid Ansari.
  • Vidya, who almost always chooses to be dressed traditionally at award shows, wore a pink kanjeevaram and diamond chandelier earrings. She arrived fashionably late and was accompanied by her parents.
  • Vidya, who plays Southern siren Silk Smitha in the biopic, said she was happy to change the image of the heroine in movies and that it was high time Bollywood got used to the concept of bold and beautiful. She also said that the fact she had won the National Award had only just sunk in.
  • Vidya’s rumoured beau, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, was also at the ceremony collecting the Best Children’s Film award for Chillar Party on behalf of producers UTV Motion Pictures. Among other winners, actor Sanjay Suri and director Onir received the Best Hindi Film prize for I AM, and Marathi actor Girish Kulkarni was this year’s Best Actor for Deool.
  • The National Awards were announced on March 7, and the ceremony was held today at New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan. Jury head Rohini Hattangady spoke at the ceremony which was presided over by Vice President Ansari and Information And Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni. In attendance were Shatrughan Sinha, Shyam Benegal and Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who received the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for his contribution to cinema.
