Mumbai: Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra said that with Neerja, Sonam Kapoor might find herself.

"It feels that with this film, Sonam will find herself and that's the expectation. It is said that every artist, every actor or every writer and director achieves something when they find themselves. I feel the same way for Sonam as far as this film is concerned," said Mr Mehra.

Sonam made hr debut in Bollywood with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya. Soon after, she featured in Mr Mehra's Delhi-6 and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

The film has been produced by photographer Atul Kasbekar.

"A new producer has been born. He is very sincere, hardworking and has excelled in whatever he has done. Best wishes to him," Mr Mehra said.

Neerja has been directed by newcomer Ram Madhvani.(Also Read: What Neerja Bhanot's Mother Told Sonam Kapoor When They Met)

"It is the birth of a new director. When a new director comes and joins the family, it feels good. He is a very promising director. I share an old friendship with him. He is well known in advertising where he has done extremely well," added Mr Mehra.

Neerja documents the story of Neerja Bhanot, who was killed in the 1986 hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi. Ms Bhanot, who was 23, died while shielding a group of children from gunfire and became the youngest ever recipient of the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

The film casts Sonam Kapoor as the slain stewardess.

"Not just are Indians proud of her but she is an example for the whole world. Neerja's story is that way. When we were growing up and were in college, this incident happened. It was an inspiring matter," he added.

Neerja also stars Shabana Azmi and Shekhar Ravjiani, and will release on February 19 .
