Firth, who has starred in movies like Bridget Jones'sDiary, Mamma Mia and A Single Man, has reportedlyimpressed the monarch with his portrayal of her father'sbattle to overcome a speech impediment.

Besides Firth, singer and songwriter Bryan Ferry hasalso received a CBE. Others like golfer Lee Westwood, cricketcaptain Andrew Strauss, artist Sam Taylor-Wood and jazz singerClaire Martin will each receive an OBE (Officers of the Orderof the British Empire).

The Queen bestows honours twice a year, atNew Year's Eve and her official birthday. While she turned 85on April 21, she traditionally celebrated an "official"birthday on June 11.

The recipients of the honours are selected bycommittees of civil servants from nominations made by thegovernment and the public, but the Queen must give her formalapproval before they are awarded.
