For Steven Spielberg, Oscar glory after Golden Globe defeat?

For Steven Spielberg, Oscar glory after Golden Globe defeat?

Highlights

  • Among the most exhilarating moments at the Golden Globes 2013 was when Ben Affleck, director of three films, brought down the mighty Steven Spielberg, veteran of over 30. Ben Affleck's Argo won two of the five Globes it was nominated for and these were two of the biggies - Best Dramatic Picture and Best Director. Mr Spielberg's Lincoln scored just one out of it's seven nominations - Best Dramatic Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis as President Lincoln.
  • But here's why Mr Spielberg might just go home a happy man - Ben Affleck is not nominated for a Best Director Oscar. Just days ago, Ben received an Oscar snub as did other Golden Globe Best Director nominees Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained).
  • This leaves only Ang Lee (Life Of Pi) and Steven Spielberg from the Golden Globe nominees in the running for the Oscar. Competing against them is David O. Russell who was overlooked for a Globe nomination though his movie Silver Linings Playbook was up for Best Picture - Comedy/Musical. Also waiting in the wings are dark horses Michael Haneke for the French language Amour and Benh Zeitlin for fantasy-drama Beasts of The Southern Wild.
  • Civil War biopic Lincoln is the season favourite, with 12 Oscar nominations, 10 BAFTA nominations and four SAG nominations pending. However, it has so far lost all Crtics' awards for Best Picture and Director thus far to either Ben Affleck and Argo or Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty.
  • But, on February 24, while Lincoln will still have to see off Argo and Zero Dark Thirty, there will be no Affleck or Bigelow to topple Mr Spielberg. It's now upto messrs Lee, Russell, Haneke and Zeitlin to bring down the giant.
