JK Simmons has won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor for Whiplash.

Mr Simmons plays a jazz band instructor who uses humiliation, fear and cruelty to motivate his students - especially Miles Teller, who co-stars as an ambitious aspiring jazz drummer.

The other nominees Sunday were, Robert Duvall, The Judge; Ethan Hawke, Boyhood; Edward Norton, Birdman; and Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher.

The 72nd annual Golden Globes are airing live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
