New Delhi: Two Avengers assembled on Wall Street yesterday, on a mission to keep the peace in the world of American finance. Actors Robert Downey Jr and Jeremy Renner, better known as Iron Man and Hawkeye from Marvel's superhero franchise, rang the Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange on April 27.

No feats of strength or ability were involved. Jeremy Rennet pressed the button that sounds the bell at 9.30 am local time. Iron Man and Hawkeye now belong to a small band of notable bellringers, both fictional - Mickey Mouse, Pink Panther, Darth Vader - and non-fictional - Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan and Michael Phelps.

The actors were on bell-ringing duty to promote their latest film in the superhero ensemble series, Avengers: Age of Ultron, which will release in the US on May 1. Marvel executives accompanied their actors but the rest of the Avengers - comprising Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Evans, Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson - were absent. How many superheroes does it take to ring a bell, after all?

Neither Mr Downey Jr nor Mr Renner were in character, although Iron Man's suit was present to watch proceedings. Both actors were conventionally dressed in suits and Mr Downey Jr added quirky hi-tops to his look.
