London: Hollywood actress Katie Holmes recreated one of the most heartbreaking moments in the US when she shot scenes as a grieving Jackie Kennedy at the funeral of JFK for the mini-series titled The Kennedys.

The 31-year-old, who has spent the past month filming The Kennedys in Toronto, Canada, was dressed in a black shift dress, long leather gloves with the First Lady's signature bob, according to reports. During shooting, she was seen clutching her young co-star, who is playing John Kennedy Jr.

The eight-hour TV series covers the rise of the family's political dynasty and JFK's controversial death. Holmes admits she has sought acting advice on the role from her husband Tom Cruise.

"I definitely come home and say to him, 'So, imagine a scene... how would you play it?' And he's helpful and sweet and gracious," she said in an interview.

The Kennedys, which also stars Greg Kinnear, is set to air in the US next year on the History Channel.

JFK was assassinated on Nov 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, and buried in Arlington Cemetery following a state funeral three days later and estimated one million Americans came for the procession in Washington, DC, while millions more tuned in on television.

Jackie and her two children, John Jr, 3, and Caroline, 5, rode behind the hearse in a black car, accompanied by Robert and Edward Kennedy.

One of the most moving moments of the day came when JFK Jr stepped forward as the coffin left the cathedral and put his hand to his forehead in salute.

JFK Jr was also to die young, when the light aircraft he was piloting plunged into the Atlantic in 1999. His wife and sister-in-law also died.
