Amy Fine Collins, who compiled the list, was quoted by the media as saying, "People who make the list are individuals. They don't look like everyone else. They tend to be fashion leaders, not followers.

"Michelle Obama plays a very important role in fashion right now. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has a sexier, sultrier look. And Samantha Cameron is the first visibly pregnant first lady we've had on the list."

46-year-old Michelle, who has often been compared to Jacqueline Kennedy due to her sense of style, appeared on the cover and in a photo spread in March 2009 issue of Vogue.

The US First Lady often wears clothes by designers Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta, Isabel Toledo, and Narciso Rodriguez, and has become a fashion trendsetter, in particular her favouring of sleeveless dresses showcasing her toned arms.

Likewise, 42-year-old former Italian supermodel-turned singer Bruni, who got married to President Nicolas Sarkozy in February 2008, is often called the 'First Lady of Fashion' for her sartorial sense.
