New York: Blue Valentine co-stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling competed with each other to gain weight for the film and the actress won by a pound.

The 30-year-old actress emerged the winner after she gained over two stones for her role as a unhappy wife and mother, reported Huffington Post online.

Director David Cianfrance initially wanted William's character to lose weight as her life unravelled. But the Brokeback Mountain actress thought it might be more realistic if she gained weight instead.

Williams and Gosling decided to make it interesting by competing against each other, and the Dawson Creek star beat him by barely a pound.

"She ended up winning. She gained about 15, 16 pounds. He gained 14," said Cianfrance.

The actress threw herself into the weight gain process with enthusiasm, eating high-fat foods all day long.

"Michelle was eating a pint of ice cream for breakfast and dinner and avocado sandwiches all day. She wanted to do it. She talked about her character having a certain self-hatred," said Cianfrance.
