In typically private fashion, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married on Saturday, said a spokesperson for the couple. (Also Read: When Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt Exchanged Love-Letters )

The wedding was held in a private ceremony at a small chapel on their French estate, Chateau Miraval, and was attended by family and friends. In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Angelina, 39, and Brad,50, also obtained a marriage license from a local California judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France. The couple's children took part in the wedding. Angelina walked the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox and Pax. Zahara and Vivienne threw petals. Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers, the spokesman says.

The couple have been dating since meeting on the sets of Mr & Mrs Smith in 2005, and announced they were engaged in April 2012. Angelina was spotted with a giant ring on her finger which Brad helped design. The couple have six children together, including three they adopted: 13-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia; 10-year-old Pax, from Vietnam; and 9-year-old Zahara, from Ethiopia. The couple's three biological children are 8-year-old Shiloh, and Knox and Vivienne, 6-year-old twins.

Brad, who once said he wouldn't marry till gay marriage was legalized, spoke to The Associated Press some months after the engagement was announced."It's an exciting prospect, even though for us, we've gone further than that. But to concretize it in that way, it actually means more to me than I thought it would. It means a lot to our kids," he said.

Despite rumours of a wedding at their French chateau all of last year, Angelina and Brad repeatedly failed to set a date. Or, it seems now, to make one public.

In May this year, Angelina said she was in no hurry to get married. "Nothing is ready. I don't have a dress," E!Online.com quoted her as saying. In June, she said George Clooney - a close friend of Brad's and engaged to british lawyer Amal Alamuddin - would probably get married first.

Both Angie and Brad have been married previously - Angelina to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, and Brad to F.R.I.E.N.D.S star Jennifer Aniston.

Oscar-winner Angelina was last seen on-screen in the blockbuster Maleficent. Brad appeared in last year's World War Z and 12 Years A Slave, also serving as producer for both.

Both are prepping movies. Angie's second film as director, the World War II odyssey Unbroken, will be released in December. Brad stars in the upcoming World War II drama Fury, due out on October 17.
