Highlights

  • Hollywood woke up to the announcement of this year's Oscar nominees today, read out by Rush star Chris Hemsworth and Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. Tom Hanks was a notable omission - snubbed for Best Actor - in an otherwise expected list of nominees.
  • American Hustle and Gravity led the nominations list with 10 nods each, including for Best Film and Best Director. Like the previous two years, nine films have made it to the Best Film category. The remaining seven spots were taken by 12 Years A Slave, Philomena, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska and Her.
  • Alfonso Cuaron, who just won a Golden Globe for directing Gravity, was nominated for Best Director here as well, as were American Hustle's David O Russell, Nebraska's Alexander Payne, 12 Years A Slave's Steve McQueen and Martin Scorsese, scooping his seventh Oscar nomination, for The Wolf Of Wall Street.
  • Best Actor favourites Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) featured on Oscar list as did Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf Of Wall Street), Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Christian Bale (American Hustle) who is thought to have edged out Tom Hanks. Of the five, Bale already has an Oscar having previously won Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Fighter. Matthew McConaghey and Leonardo DiCaprio were the top men at the Golden Globes this year.
  • There were no surprises in the Best Actress list. Blue Jasmine's Cate Blanchett and American Hustle's Amy Adams - both Golden Globe winners - received Oscar nods as did Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Judi Dench for Philomena and Meryl Streep, notching up her 18th nomination, for August: Osage County. Of the five nominees, Amy Adams is the only actress not to have won an Oscar previously.
  • Both Supporting Actor categories included the names of this year's Globe winners as well - Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club and Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle. Jennifer Lawrence was last year's Best Actress at the Oscars for Silver Linings Playbook.
  • Other names in the Best Supporting Actor category include Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips, Michael Fassbender for 12 Years A Slave, Bradley Cooper for American Hustle and Jonah Hill for The Wolf Of Wall Street. None of the five nominees are previous Oscar winners. Also up for Best Supporting Actress are Blue Jasmine's Sally Hawkins, 12 Years A Slave's Lupita Nyong'o, August: Osage County's Julia Roberts and Nebraska's June Squibb.
  • The Oscars will be hosted by comedienne Ellen Degeneres on March 2.
