Hollywood's biggest night just ended in Los Angeles and the red carpet at the Oscars was all sleek celebrities in high-octane ballgowns.

There was a preponderance of white and black. Best Actress winner Julianne Moore and fellow nominees Marion Cotillard and Reese Witherspoon wore Chanel, Dior and Tom Ford, respectively.

Best Supporting Actress winner Patricia Arquette wore black and white Rosetta Getty. Best Supporting Actress nominee Meryl Streep wore monochrome Lanvin and Cate Blanchett, last year's Best Actress winner, was stunning in black Maiso Martin Margiela topped by a turquoise collar.

Last year's Best Supporting Actress Lupita Nyong'o wore a pearl-encrusted dress by Calvin Klein and looked as though she risen directly from the ocean bed and been transported to Hollywood Boulevard. Jennifer Aniston, who was overlooked for a Best Actress nod but presented an Oscar, wore pale, shimmering Versace. Anna Kendrick, who performed the opening musical sequence with host Neil Patrick Harris, wore a pink confection by Thakoon.

Jennifer Lopez and Best Supporting Actress nominee Emma Stone both wore glittering, beaded Elie Saab dresses. JLo could not have been pleased to see a similar version of her dress on Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Duvall's wife Luciana.

Rosamund Pike, who was nominated for Best Actress for Gone Girl, turned heads in a scarlet Givenchy lace dress. Dakota Johnson's claim to cinematic fame may be Fifty Shades Of Grey but she picked Saint Laurent red for her presenting gig.

Nicole Kidman's gold Louis Vuitton dress left a lot of fashion critics cold. Also in metallic was Best Supporting Actress nominee Laura Dern wearing silver Alberta Ferretti. Birdman actress Naomi Watts wore a silvery-grey and black Armani Prive dress.

Presenter Gwyneth Paltrow wore yet another pink dress, this one by Ralph & Russo. Supermodel Karolina Kurkova also wore pale pink, by Oscar de la Renta.

Jessica Chastain, usually on every best dressed list, wore a blue Givenchy dress that might just see her disgraced into this year's worst dressed ones. Scarlett Johansson picked green Versace which was inoffensive enough on its own but paired it with a monstrous green necklace that looked as if it were strangling her.

Pop star Lady Gaga's Azzedine Alaia dress seemed almost normal until the eye was drawn by the red gloves she paired it with. Singer Rita Ora showed up in a glamorous Marchesa dress.
