London: Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling sayshis 2004 romantic drama The Notebook can cause break-ups asits story sets unreasonably high romantic standards forreal-life couples.

Gosling, who gained mainstream success for the filmwith his former girlfriend Rachel McAdams, said that one man'slove story left him worried about the film's lasting impact,Contactmusic reported.

"People would come up to me and tell me that theythought it was romantic, but one guy told me that he wasengaged and (his fiancee) broke up with him after that moviebecause she said to him, 'You wouldn't build a house for me,would you?' He was like, 'Well, no, but I don't know how.'"

"She said, 'But if you knew how?' He said, 'No, Iwouldn't. But it doesn't mean I don't love you.' She said,'Yeah, it does.' And she called it off," narrated the30-year-old actor.

The Half Nelson star fears that overly-romantictales could have serious repercussions for real-life couples.

"If you see some of those movies, then you look atyour own romance and it doesn't compare, you think, 'Oh, whatI have isn't love because that's love'. And our hope, I think,in making this movie is that you will recognise yourrelationship in this, maybe not to this extreme, but oncertain levels, and go home and realise that that's reallywhat it is," he said.

"We hold ourselves to unreasonable standards, it'sprobably why a lot of times we don't stick it out," Goslingadded.
