New Delhi: Be afraid. Be very afraid. Tom Cruise, who has been saving the world one mega-budget film at a time, battles the undead in his new film The Mummy, the first trailer of which released a few hours ago and is trending. The action-supernatural movie is the latest in the series of films Hollywood has made featuring a mummy, one of the biggest money-spinners of the horror pantheon. Tom Cruise, 54, stars as a character named Nick Morton while actress Sofia Boutella, seen in films like Kingsman: The Secret Service, is cast in the title role. The Mummy is the first of a new series that will feature all the classic movie monsters, including Dracula, The Invisible Man and Frankenstein's Monster.

The Mummy is taglined "Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters," with Sofia Boutella playing the eponymous monster, an ancient evil returned from the dead.

The trailer of The Mummy reveals that a military escort flying the mummy in its sarcophagus to America is attacked mid-air, after which Tom Cruise wakes up in a body bag. The mummy, who was a princess named Ahmanet, terrorizes the streets to "claim what she has been denied." This last is revealed by Dr Henry Jekyll (yes, that Dr Jekyll), played by Russell Crowe. We are not told exactly what Princess Ahmanet has been denied. "She is real," Tom Cruise's character assures Jenny Halsey, played by actress Annabelle Wallis. The cast also includes Jake Johnson as a soldier.

The Mummy, directed by Alex Kurtzman, releases on June 9, 2017. Previous films featuring mummies included the trilogy that starred Brendan Fraser, made between 1999 and 2008, and Dwayne Johnson's The Scorpion King series.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise last saved the world in 2015's Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. He reprised the role of vigilante Jack Reacher in this year's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
