Mexico City: The filming of parts of the latest James Bond film SPECTRE in Mexico's capital will provide the city with good global publicity, said Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera.

At a joint press conference with Mexican Minister of Tourism Claudia Ruiz Massieu on March 19, the mayor boasted that Mexico City was chosen as the location for the opening scenes of the 007 film over such cosmopolitan centres as New York and Singapore, Xinhua reported.

"It makes us proud to have Mexico City form part of the opening scenes, because the whole world would see us. Everyone knows the reach James Bond has worldwide," he said. (Also Read: In SPECTRE Poster, Daniel Craig is Armed and Very, Very Dangerous)

In response to media reports that Mexico had to spend up to US$14 million to ensure it gets favourable publicity from its role in SPECTRE, Mr Mancera said that the city had no economic stake in the film but that it was supplying locations and helping production with such logistics as re-routing traffic. According to Mr Massieu, the capital's cameo in the latest Bond movie is part of the ministry's national promotion strategy, which has in the past two years attracted more than 53 million international visitors.
