Vipul Shah's Action Replay is apparently based on a Gujarati film of the same name. I don't know if that Gujarati play had anything to do with Back To The Future. This movie certainly does.
It concerns a young boy who travels back in time, on a time machine, to save his parent's marriage. His dad and mom hate each other's guts. He thinks if he can hooks them up better, they might become a better couple later as well.
So we're in Bombay of the 1970s. Well, this is not necessarily the way Bombay was. It's more like we know it from the films. The roads are clean, wide with fewer cars. Everyone's dressed in the fashion, I guess, of the '70s. Love marriage is a taboo. The boy's young dad, that's Akshay Kumar, needs serious help.
He's buck-teethed, under-confident, made fun of by everyone. The boy who would be the son becomes the dating instructor. This plot's a lot like the Will Smith starrer Hitch.
Aishwarya Rai is the hot girl. Rannvijay is another guy interested in her.
The dating guru gets both the suitor to fight it out in a singing medley contest, much like that cracker musical of the 70s Hum Kisise Kum Nahin.
The only difference is that for a musical, this movie has an incredibly third rate soundtrack. And the plot itself works only when Akshay Kumar is around. Now this may be superstar Akshay's career defining performance. But then again, if you've followed his career so far, you'd know, that's not saying too much.
