Check out: Our special onThe Dark Knight
Heath Ledger's swan song as Joker in the The Dark Knight has not just won him accolades posthumously, but has also become an important reason behind the stupendous opening of the film.
According to it's distributors,Warner Bros. Pictures , Christopher Nolan directed The Dark Knight has smashed the opening-weekend record set by Spider Man 3 last year.
Starring Christian Bale for a second time as billionaire Bruce Wayne and his superhero alter ego, the film lit up cinema cash registers with $155.3 million in three-day weekend ticket sales, shattering the $151.1 million Friday-Sunday record of Spider Man 3 set in 2007.
In 2005, Christopher Nolan had resurrected the franchise with Batman Begins starring Welsh star Christian Bale. The film was welcomed by the audience and had earned a $48.7 million during its first weekend in 2005, and finished up with $205 million. Though this figures is nothing compared tho the latest ones.
The latest film reportedly cost about $180 million to make, thanks in part to the pioneering use of Imax heavy cameras to shoot the film for giant-screen theaters. The filmmakers also blew up bits of Chicago, which doubles for the fictional Gotham City.
What makes the film even more special for the audience is that it features Ledger's last and brilliant performance as the Joker, a role that was made into a legend by Jack Nicholson's critically acclaimed portrayal in 1989's Batman.
This is Ledger's last completed role before he died of an accidental overdose in January.
The Australian actor's complex character as the devious and dark humoured Joker has already been declared an Oscar deserving act by the critics.
People, some dressed in character costumes had been queuing outside the theatres for hours in US, just after the film opened on Friday midnight.
Some theaters kept screening the film throughout the night to meet demand. Now that for sure made it a dazzling (k)night!
