Geeta Mohandas' film Kelkkunnundo (Are You Listening) bagged the 'Golden Lamp Tree' award in the International Competition for Short films and documentaries at the 40th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) today.
The 'Golden Lamp Tree' carries a cash prize of Rs five lakh, a trophy and a citation.
The Jury headed by Malayalam filmmaker Shahji Karun described 'Kelkkunnundo' as a well crafted and poignantly acted film about the trauma of progress seen through the innocence and blindness of a child.
Supriyo Sen's 'Wagah', produced by German company Detail Film India, was selected for Silver Lamp tree award in International competition. The film, which depicts the pomp and pageantry of national pride as seen through the playful eyes of children, won a cash prize of Rs three lakh.
The Special jury mention comprising cash prize of Rs two lakh went to Eric Raynaud of France for his film 'Just a Pitch' for his witty and deeply satirical script about just how difficult it is to succeed in pitching a film, when the pitch concerns freedom or imprisonment.
In the Environment competition, Sanjeev Sivan and Umesh Aggarwala bagged the first Vasudha Award for best film on environmental issues 'Underground Inferno' that highlights the global menace faced worldwide due to coal mine fires.
The filmmakers bagged a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh.
The second Vasudha award went to 'Meltdown in Tibet' by Michael Buckley from Canada for shedding light on the potential catastrophic dam building projects in Tibet. The award also carried cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh.
Ramesh Tekwani, vice president of Indian Documentary Producers Association (IDPA) said 20 films in the international section and six in the environment section were shortlisted out of 300 entries.
