London Dreams
Cast: Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Asin
Music: Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy
Director: Vipul Shah
Producer: Aashin Shah

My biggest apprehension about London Dreams was how director Vipul Amrutlal Shah would convincingly transform two middle-aged actors, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn, into pop stars. As it turns out, that is the least of this film’s problems.

London Dreams is about two friends, Arjun played by Ajay and Mannu played by Salman, who have been together since their school days in Bhatinda.

Despite his rural surroundings, Arjun nurtures a fierce desire to be a pop singer. But his father cannot tolerate his ambitions because his own father was a famous musician who committed suicide after a disastrous concert at London’s Wembley stadium. When Arjun’s father dies, his uncle, also a music hater, takes Arjun to London, where he promptly runs away. He runs all the way from the airport to London city where he plays a flute on the street, earns a few pennies and, incredibly enough, puts himself through a fancy looking music school. You must have figured out by now that logic and realism are not high on the priority list here.

In fact, all of Arjun’s dreams fall into place laughably easily – he gets a band, an audition with a big music company, a snazzy apartment, a BMW and even a dancer/groupie, Priya played by Asin. Trouble only starts when he imports Manu to London and the village bumpkin turns out to be more talented. So Arjun, like Salieri from Amadeus, accuses God of short-changing him by giving him the passion and Manu the talent and he plots Manu’s downfall, via, drugs and women.

London Dreams is a frustratingly dim-witted drama about artistic passion, friendship and insecurity. The script, written by Suresh Nair, has the complexity of a cartoon. Moments of high drama are undermined by sheer silliness.

Arjun is an intense, brooding man but his ambition is hard to take seriously because he is in the habit of whipping himself when he thinks he’s faltering. So he takes out his belt and goes into self-flagellation mode when he finds himself attracted to Priya.

You see Arjun, like his namesake from the Mahabharat, cannot take his eyes off his target of someday singing at Wembley. Mannu’s downfall is almost as funny. In one scene, we see him eating cocaine—he thinks its salt—and in the next, he’s addict.

Meanwhile 90,000 people, including Brits who I’m assuming cannot follow Hindi, are lining up to see these two men sing Hindi songs.

Poor Priya is devoid of even these superficial traits – all we know about her is that she comes from a strict Iyer family and therefore does classical dance at home but wears miniskirts outside. When her conservative father sees her in rockstar mode on a poster, she explains that it’s a look alike and he believes her.

Most of us don’t watch Hindi films for their verisimilitude but honestly, how much disbelief can a viewer suspend. There are a few nice songs here and occasional moments of charm provided by Salman Khan, who once again, plays a variation of Salman Khan.

Otherwise London Dreams is as much fun as a stuck record. See it if you must.

She is definitely biased against Salman. London Dreams is easily the best film of 2009 and will be remembered for stupendous performances by the lead actors especially Salman and Ajay.

Your reviewer never ever gives a good rating to a Salman movie for some strange reason!! We have seen the movie and agree that London Dreams is the best film of 2009. And it is definitely Vipul Shah's best so far.

LONDON DREAMS: MOVIE REVIEW First things first. London Dreams is no Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, neither its sequel nor it is Rock On. London Dreams is loosely inpired by Amadeus - the movie on Europe's great musicians and composers of all time Mozart and Beethoven and Rajkumar Santoshi were to film on Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan once a decade back. London Dreams is the story of two childhood friends from Punjab, India. It is the story about one friend who dreams to be a pop star like Michael Jackon by making it big at the Wembley Stadium, London and other friend who considers his friend to be God and supports his dream in every sense. London Dreams is about the jealousy between gifted talent and hard earned talent for music and love. It is just coincident that London Dreams also has love factor in the story alike Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam but no in the pivotal role of the subject. Music is the subject and so goes on the story. But unfortunately songs are average kind in the movie. London Dreams is a story of one destined and god-gifted talent, Manjit Khosla a.k.a. Manu (Salman Khan) and hard working musician with passion for music & a dream to make it big & the Lead Singer of London Dreams Band. Arjun (Ajay Devgan) and their friendship and the struggle and winning back the lost pride of the family and the victory at one may say Mecca of Music audience, the Wembley at London. London Dreams is the first Indian movie or movie by any Indian Filmmaker where in London is depicted so lively and so beautiful and so picturesque, so is beautifully portrayed the Eiffel Tower of Paris in background when Salman proposes Asin. Thank God, London Dreams does not have the Yash Chopra style of Punjab. It would be outright incorrect to mention here any thing about the roles of Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan intentionally, because London Dreams is truly the first Blockbuster hit of 2009. About Asin, she reminds of typical heroine from South in Hindi Movies of 80s - a s

seriously man... we need reviewers like you, who're straight to the point and blunt... it's high time indian directors/producers stop taking the junta for granted and stop making films so senseless that it's offensive to even watch them... also i like the way u review a movie, it's based on the movie quality and not on how much business the movie will make...

I believe most of the audiences watch movies only for relaxation and to see their favourite stars on the screen. Nobody involves themselves into the movie in seeing the logic of the film and all.
