Dasavathaaram
Cast: Kamal Haasan, Asin, Jayaprada
Music: Himesh Reshammiya
Director: K S Ravikumar
Writer: DASAVATARAM

I met Kamal Haasan 48 hours before the release of Dasavathaaram, a film that he considered his most ambitious. I asked how many marks on 10 Kamal gives himself as an actor. "I am a reluctant actor,'' Kamal said, "I will perhaps give myself two or four," he said, wearing his modesty on his sleeve. And how many marks out of 10 as a screenplay writer, Kamal? "I think I am one of the best in the business." After watching the Tamil version of Dasavathaaram, first day first show, in Hyderabad on Friday, I wondered if Kamal had got his roles mixed up. Kamal, the actor, comes up trumps. His 10 avatars could well have been different actors. But then, what is new about Kamal being a brilliant actor? Dasavathaaram, unfortunately, remains just a film with its USP of 10 Kamals. This Kamal does not blossom the way he did in Indian or Nayakan, Appu Raja, Mahanadi, Avvai Shanmughi or in Thevar Magan. As a Kamal admirer, I left the hall disappointed. Amid all the grandeur of a massive canvas, I missed the soul. One of the best in the business falters with the film's story and screenplay. Kamal did admit the entire story is just a ploy but then a master storyteller needs to carry his audience with him. This probably did not happen and that's why I overheard one of a group of youngsters in the row behind me exclaim in the intermission. "Hey, what has Kamal done? I am lost.'' That to me, summed up the problem with Dasavathaaram. Kamal, the storyteller, had not managed to convey a coherent storyline to the audience. The first actor in world cinema doing 10 roles had brought them to the theatre but now they wanted a good story to hold their interest. The plot deals with the theft of a vial containing a biosynthetic weapon, out of a high security lab in the USA. Kamal as scientist Govind, chases it to India but there is another Kamal as ex-CIA agent Fletcher who also is trying to get hold of it. That is the climax towards which Kamal's magnum opus works. The entire film from the third reel to the end is a chase and nothing else. A chase, in which many of the different Kamals are either saving or searching for the vial that could wipe out humanity. It is an out and out Kamal film, literally. He is in every scene, every frame of the film. The challenge of making the characters distinct is achieved but not all of them are engaging, engrossing and interesting. Govind, the lead character, is most unimpressive and you do not feel anything for him. Others look like caricatures. Be it Krishnaveni Paati, or the seven-feet tall Kalifulla or singer Avatar Singh (who looks so much like Gulshan Grover!). The two Kamals who stand out are RAW officer Balram Naidu and George Bush, where Kamal is very good. Where was K S Ravikumar? The director, who showed his very typical stamp of humour in hits like Muthu, Padayappa, Avvai Shanmughi was sadly missing. His exuberance at the end of the film to sing Ulaga Nayakagane, proclaiming Kamal as the universal hero, seems almost like a desperate measure. On that roller coaster of a film, Govind's consort is a reluctant and short-tempered Asin, who to her credit does hold herself well against Kamal. Mallika Sherawat is wasted. Jayaprada should have let her fans remember only her partnership with Kamal in Sagarasangamam instead of spoiling her CV with a forgettable role as Avtar Singh's wife. (By the way, Sagarasangamam is Kamal's favourite film !) Kamal says he spent over 500 hours doing make-up for the 10 roles. The time is well-spent for the make up artist has by far done the best job in the film. Special effects are very international, very Hollywood. And this would be one film, which irrespective of how it does at the box office, will be a benchmark for special effects work in any Indian film. Himesh Reshammiya as music director was not Kamal's first choice though he said he liked the music. Did he? Really? Most people in Tamil Nadu have not. Barring the Kallai and the Mukunda numbers, Himesh is very ordinary. Will this film work for the audience in rural Tamil Nadu? It is a big if. And given that Dasavatharam is possibly India's costliest film ever, the consequences seem frightening for those who made the film. I asked Kamal, will he take a long break after the strenuous work of creating 10 characters, all in one film. He said he does not feel the stress when he is working on a film because he loves his job. I asked Ravikumar how he will unwind. He said : "By doing a film, with a single actor who plays a single role in the film.'' Viewers who have watched the film, would agree, 10 is indeed too much of a crowd.

I will never rate this movie as a Ravikumar's movie. It is an out and out Kamal's movie. Actor Kamal has done justice to the roles he played but the screenplay was crap. I would say he did not understand the butterfly effect. Makeup for many Kamals were bad. And he had wasted several good actors just to project himself as a better actor. My rating for this movie would be 4/10 (4 for Actor Kamal and not for anything else).

Hello, u are at sea and blind enough not to understand the theme and how nicely Kamal the story teller connected the characters over the period of centuries and all walks of life and bring out the moral values? of politicians .The make up , special effects and dubbing voices for all the characters and dialogues and debate about God together with the naturalism in acting of 10 different characters is worth watching many times.Hats off to Kamal. While u, the critics are falling over to praise a hollywood film with all special effects without a story line why u r blind to recognise a good work done by an indian .

it is just like watching the fancy show.it is idiotic to watch this movie.he(kamal) is unable to manage the 10 roles consequetively

A brilliant manipulation of a story lifted from a Telugu film wherin venkatesh was the hero . Am not sure about the film name . But it definitely came years before Desavatharam . I can bet till my last penny that the story and screen play was lifted from this film , wherein Venkatesh is an archeologist who warns people of disasters if a Statue of Shiva with an invaluable stone embedded . In fact , in one scene , Venkatesh is seen dragging the statue to the sea , much akin to kamal-napolean's Perumal-Shiva devotional interest's conflict scene . But then , Kamal knew the canny method to bring in a 007 story touch merged with this telugu film

This is a film that boldly questions religious beliefs. Characters have been abruptly and casually introduced. You find a Dalit fighting a sand mafia in the midst of an attempt to rape. Kalifulla emerges from nowhere. Chris Fletcher, Balram Naidu and Krishnaveni Patti are simply outstanding. "Mukunda, Mukunda" is my favourite. "Ulaga Nayagane" was a little disgusting. Does Kamal need a song like this to market himself? The film's message seems to be that atheists are not to be detested. They must have been let down by God as He did Rangaraja Nambi.

i never seen a best film like this. hats off to Dr.Kamal Hassan. especially the Balraam Naidu charctor is tremendous. no one in Indian film Indusrty will act like this. all the best to the Dasavathaaram team.

I really pity the reviewer's knowledge in understanding the film. Hats off to Kamal for the strain taken to implement the Chaos theory & Butterfly effect in a racy thriller. Blending 10 characters in such a brilliant story that deals with Chaos theory,Bio-synthetic weapon,Tsunami,(A)theism,Racism... is not an easy task. All in all, an Intelligent movie for the real movie lovers, with kamal's touch in it.

an awesome movie, great acting displayed everywhere. Problem was that half the people in the theatre found it hard to understand the storyline

Cheers to Kamalhassan for playing the role of Balaram Naidu which was the "only character" in the entire film who managed to keep me seated with his great humorous dialogues and sense of timing.....other wise it was a wild chase !!! few characters had an extremly shoddy makeup......like seven foot khan who were simply lipsynching the dialogoes like chewing gum !!

We should appreciate the team has made very good attempt to making a such a great film.Hats of to kamal and his team. Best movie in this century and best acting, cinematography and visualisation all the awards will go to this movie undoubtly. There is no need to talk about story and every one has to see the screenplay and how the ten characters are delivered by Kamal.

Poor reveiw, I can give 1 star to your review. If you dont how to review please dont do that. Watch the movie again and think of your question about K.S.Ravikumar.It is very easy reviewing a film like you do.

I think the author has to learn the nuances of movie reviewing. He says that he heard from behind people talking in disbelief. There could be another corner where in people would have praised this performance which had not gone into his ears or did not want to hear them. (He could have avoided this.) Sudhir , need not be so harsh in his reviews. Infact he has ridiculed himself. I recomend NDTV management to put him on PIP( Performance Improvement Plan) as he is not upto the standard of reviewing movies.

Surely, Dasavatharam is not a run of the mill type film. It has got international standard, especially, the opening and tsunami scenes. Kamal has proved that he is the universal hero by his yet another brilliant and amazing performance. In all the 10 roles he did, his energy level and body lanaguage were spell bound.

In the History of Film industy no Hero could reach the hights and achivement of The Great Ulaga Maha Nayagan (Kamal). In the Movie Dasavathaaram Kamla has given 10 diffrent roles and each role as its impact in the sorry. The sorry is about the God. Movie is Exclent and the acting is Extra ordinary. Movie is Supper Hit......

What are we comparing? If DTVM is benchmarked against Kamal's greatest then no it does not make the cut. But if it is Vs everybody else then it does pretty ok. Especially considering that it is ushering in a new genre of films- bioterrorism, tsunami phenomena, great graphic effects, and ofcourse 10 avatars are all new to Indian audience. Curious to know if the hindi version is doing well. This is a multiplex movie where one would expect at least the literate crowd in big cities of North India would appreciate.

dasavathram kamal experimental flop film reason 1. weak story 2. poor make up at least five characters 3. i think he made it clear he wants do 10 characters in this film for world record so he done this film noting more in it out of ten the unnecessary characters are 1.bush 2.singer 3. Muslim 4.old lady 5.Vincent this characters is just he wants to act in ten different role that is it the opening of the film is great after that nothing just chasing out of ten he has done good in balaram naidu character and fletcher bz he dt speak much dialog in that role totally really very sorry Kamal sir as a good fan of u i expected more in yr acting than make ups u r wonderful actor sir to be honest i rate hey ram and anbey sivam is far best movies than dasavatharam and k.s ravikumar yr r help less we know finally why sir u wasted 165 corers for this story producer pray to god to get back Money..............i have seen this movie two time in the span of four days more i can c i can easily point out the blunders of the movie better luck next time KAMAL HASSAN........

Most of the reviewers are having issues with understanding this movie. Kamal's screenplay is set in a such a way that he is expecting the audience to closely follow the proceeding and connect the dots. Hence, for people who have not watched such stories, it's difficult to comprehend what's going on. This is an intelligent script written with the assumption that viewers will find their own answers. I am just disappointed with the standard of critics as much as with the standard of Tamil movies in general. Looks like no critic can think out of the box. There hasn't been one single intelligent review. In fact, reviews in public forums are much better

The problem is with you, Sudheer...Why do you walk in thinking of Mahanadi, Avvai Shanmugi et al...Go in with a fresh mind and heart, and you would definetely have a full

this is certainly one of the best movies of the year, thanks to kamal for introducing a new concept to the indian audience who only like masala movies. if you have chaos theory at the back of ur mind than u will surely enjoy the movie , that is the thread that links the first part of the movie to the last part. the screen play is superb and the movie just accelerates within the stipulated 165 mins, a must watch for everyone its really one fo the milestones in the histroy of indian cinema. i dont deny the fact that the movie has been made with the urban audience at the back of the mind.

Posted by:  mudaltiru ]
For 10 avatars and technically, no doubt it is a milestone. And see the flurry of reviews within 3 days herein ndtvmovies.com itself. Despite 'chaos theory', the chase is little lengthy, which may not go well for general public. I expected some more philosophical discussion after tsunami. The climax in the beginning(12th century) is spell binding. Music is not bad at all. Hear again at your leisure. It will surely grip you.

First it was a good effort given by india's uncertanity in cinema business. If couple of songs had been hit the move would be more interesting to watch.my score is 8/10.

Posted by:  Anniyan ]
It is one of the great movies on the Indian screens. The story line is so small but the screenplay and the taking were excellent. Kamal has played leading role in this movie. He has played 10 roles that is not the meaning that every role should be powerful. He played some guest roles also but when you see 2 or 3 kamal together on screen we never feel that, there is a graphic or visual effect. Every thing looks like real. I can say this is the first Indian movie with full length of Hollywood standard visual effects. I can rate 4 out of 5.

Posted by:  Pradeep Rajkumar ]
In Pollachi town- Coimbatore District Theatres didnt do well. Good start of the story flawed with the story development.Music is average.Technical value is there it been exploited by script.

Posted by:  Pradeep ]
Total idiocy, almost 6 or 7 Kamals appear like toys with Plaster of paris filled all over his face(s). There's no point in watching a movie with complicated screenplay(appreciable, because of a new concept) without a story(total nonsense). Plz remove ur brains, preserve it in ur home refrigerator, and then proceed to the theatre...

Dasavatharam - Kamal originality missing -I have watched these kamal movies many many times . Some of the movies I watched many times were Apoorva Raagangal, Avargal, 16 Vayathinile , Ninaithale Inikkum ,Varumayin Niram Sigappu , Saagara Sangamam, Raja Paarvai, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Moondram Pirai, Saagar,Kalyanaraman,Swathi Muthyam ,Punnagai Mannan,Indian,Guna ,Thevar Magan, ,Apoorva Sagodharargal, Michael Madhana Kamarajan ,Avvai Shanmughi,Thenali,Panchathantiram,Anbe Sivam,Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu.- I will not see Dasvatharam for second time as Kamal’s originality is missing. Michael Madhana Kamarajan was lot better.

The review article in NDTV is so biased. The movie infact was fastgripping, splendid and spectacular. If expectations of the author were different, then it doesnt mean that movie is bad. A review from NDTV needs to be unbiased. There are minor flaws like make-up. Nut, the author has missed out the spectacular visual treat of the 12th century story line, tsunami, four kamals in single frame making you feel that they are different, impeccable american ascent of Fletcher, Japanese body language, etc.. All the more, author hasnt understtod that the story is woven around the Chaos theroy and butterfly effect , which is new to Indian cinema(although it has been done in 12B in small effect earlier). The MYTHOLOGY vs PHILOSOPHY vs SCIENCE of Hindu scripts is the base of the story! The author needs to have basic knowledge before writing an article on a movie made by one of the most like and admired actorlegend of our contemporary times!

I think you would have gone with lot of expectations to the movee. But it is not as bad as you reviewed.Being technical side or being kamal as a actor he does't disappoint as you said. The film is released with a intention to attract mass from urben area.Accordingly as per the report from theatre owners it is encouraging only.Kamal hasan always wanted to to prove his skills in different way which may not be liked by some critics.

Dasavatharam is a milestone in Indian cinema and gives the right direction to the Indian cinema industry to step forward. Not only kamal hassan’s best performances in this movie but also the techniques used in this film are wonderful. 1. I can remember I saw four kamal hassan in one scene and each role requires 10 hours of preparation and shooted in different days. Still you can feel like that each role is performed by different actors (thanks to Kamalji). 2. Especially the stunts scenes performed by fletcher kamal and japanese lady is really good. 3. The camera angles and visual effects used in this film are excellent. Don’t forget to watch the tsunami scene and eagle angle of chennai. Don’t expect these masala items in this movie and you will enjoy!!! 1. don’t expect super hero stunts like flying 100 feet from floor 2. don’t compare this movie with high budget Hollywood movies like titanic(spent 1000 crore rs) but in this movie they spent only less than 100 crores for movie production 3. item songs or duet songs or boring love story. If some body consider these 3 reasons for Hit movie, then Dasavatharam in not a Hit movie. Bye

it a Extraordinarily good file in the world. its not a one man/one country story. Extravagantly fanciful in design of the art. Its totally Universal story.

The Movie is wonderful. Of course the Movie is about the "Chase". Have you seen the hollywood flick "SPEED", nothing but just the bus, and trying to save. (though length was short). The story is of that kind and that story knits 10 rolls of kamal. Even if kamal has not done the rolls of those persons which came across, during his chase is still meaningful. But kamal has taken the challenge to do those roles on his own, and i feel he has done to great appreciation. Congratz to Kamal Haasan..

Hi Critic/Reviewer (Who ever) Please read the following (1) The CHaos Theory and (2) The butterfly effect and see the movie and write your review. THe movie is awesome. All 10 make ups (- the make up of Awatar Singh) is great. Acting is superb. To NDTV - Please dismiss such people who dont understand movies. The jobs of a critic/Reviewer is not only to critize - but to appreciate hard work and dedication. See where Khalid Mohamad and Kunal Kohili (Both cirtic turned movie makers) are. Regards, Satish

Excellent review Sudhir. You have written what any neutral viewers would like to express on seeing this movie. Seeing Kamal in different 10 roles is sure interesting but he should have created a necessity for that.

Well, Dasavatharam is watchable and definitely enjoyable. The storyline is not upto the mark but the screen play is unique enough to set a benchmark. The music is outright stupid. A film of this size should have had Illyaraja or AR Rehman doing their bits. Acting well Kamal is extremely good. Asin,Napoleon are excellent. In a summary, the special effects, make up, screen play and action makes it a definite benchmark in Indian Cinema. If you missed this film you have missed a milestone in Indian Cinema.

Posted by:  Venkatesh Sridhar ]
It is no wonder you did not like the movie as you just scratched the surface, Dasavathaaram is a pretty intense and deep movie, if you recollect each scene carefully than you would know that this entire movie is a search for the supreme being, that search is manifested by all characters who are of different faiths and have tremendous faith in God and in the end the faith is redeemed. Scenes like where the entire locality is put into the mosque and Kalifullah says that whatever Allah does is for best, Nagesh after seeing the scores of dead bodies comments that if it would have not been them inside the mosque they all would have died to which Kalifullah nods. Govind is a scientist who does not blindly follow faith but questions the existence of God and Asin tells him God created Tsunami to protect the world , a few had to die to save the billions on planet earth. This is the point that has been missed by many reviewers across the web. Dasavathaaram at its core is a search for the higher power whether it be a satellite or God (recollect the narration in the starting of the movie, where Govind says for him the higher power is satellite and he comments that the satellite and God both could not foresee the tsunami disaster)

Note: The below review is only on movie, nothing personal to any one. This movie is of great disappointment after such hype ( Not worth for such hype, just marketing stuff - bullshit bluff, liars ) I was eagerly waiting to watch this movie for a long period and finally attended premiere show of this movie with great expectations. Kamal did fair job in all 10 roles and people can watch this movie to see kamal and tsunami graphics at end of movie. Regd Story - believe me, it is completely bullshit and ridiculously stupid. For the first 20 minutes, am wondering whats happening on screen and felt that there was no connection with previous frames( esp 12th century episode). Also playing with Lord Srinivasa idol like a ball, really hurts many feelings.

Hats Off! Mr. Kamal, this is a splendid effort in brining an out-of-the-box concept and complex story telling style to Indian Cinema. Mr. Sudhir - Your review sans any sense (..The entire film from the third reel to the end is a chase and nothing else. A chase, in which many of the different Kamals are either saving or searching for the vial that could wipe out humanity....) If you had followed the initial part of the movie very carefully, you'd understand (from the narration of Govind) that the audience will start experiencing "Chaos Theory" and how the mother nature invovles lives of various people in delaying the delivery of biological wmd to a social criminal. Kamal has been highly successful in executing his concept and you were spot on saying that Kamal had not managed to convey a coherent storyline to the audience. This in-coherent storyline is a deliberate act to explain "Chaos Theory". This is a very intelligent movie - not a masala movie. If you want to enjoy an intellectual work, this is the movie to watch. Not sure if this will create commercial landmarks, but sure to bring in new concepts, new story telling styles, new technologies to Indian Cinema. KUDOS to the entire team! Every technician involved in this movie should really feel proud to be associated with Dasavatharam. Special Thanks to Kamal for his persistence in bringing out a variety everytime.

This movie has been made keeping 10 avatars of kamal in mind, but not concentrated on the story and screenplay. Overall there are few places where the movie get bored in the middle. For the hype the movie has created the movie is not good. We can watch the movie once for kamal's acting which has been seen in all his movies and for the hardwork

Perhaps TS is harsh, I thought for ont the Screen-play is its hero. It is a horondous Job to manage Ten charecters and a story line which is a thread and finally getting the act together.Kamal has done more than expected.Eforts does pay and so will Dasavatharam. On the stricter side I would give a 60% to this avatharam.
