Luck By Chance
Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Hrithik Roshan
Director: Zoya Akhtar

Pics: Stills: Luck By Chance

Mid-way through the title sequence of Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance, we see an actress dressed as an angel, in a long flowing white gown and oversized wings, walk into a toilet. That single image perfectly captures Bollywood, a space of extremes where art and commerce, the sublime and the ridiculous, 70 mm fantasies and harsh realities, head-turning fame and soul-shriveling anonymity thrust and thrive against each other.

In Luck by Chance, Zoya, a first time director but a second generation industry insider, takes us on a beguiling journey into this world.

We take the journey with two strugglers, Sona, played by Konkona Sen Sharma and Vikram, played by Farhan Akhtar, who come to Mumbai to become actors. They have no connections into the industry and their careers take different turns.

Vikram, more suave at playing the game, lands the lead role in a major film but Sona finds it harder to break beyond B-grade films and sister roles. The world they so desperately desire dooms their relationship.

Zoya, who also wrote the film, tells their story with insight and wit. Some of the characters they encounter are priceless: My favourites were Saurabh Shukla as Nand Kishore who runs the Nand Kishore school of acting, where the chief guest is MacMohan; Rishi Kapoor as producer Rommy Rolly, an old school Punjabi filmmaker who wears especially prescribed rings for better box office; and Dimple Kapadia as Neena, an erstwhile superstar described as "a crocodile in a chiffon sari" who is now overseeing the launch of her frisky 18 year-old daughter.

Of course Zoya pokes fun at Bollywood but she does it with a great affection. There are some lovely little moments like the star daughter in a super short skin-tight outfit struggling to touch her producer's feet without splitting a seam. But what makes Luck By Chance compelling, is the layers beneath the laughs.

Showbiz is a clinically cruel place. This is a world where fortunes change every Friday and as a dance director tells Sona, once you are successful, you belong to no one. This is a world in which privately, even a successful producer like Rolly weeps because a superstar whom he created, won't return his calls.

Luck By Chance interweaves these many threads so that you laugh but you don't forget that inevitably success here is a Faustian bargain. You pay for it with your soul.

There are parts of Luck By Chance that may not translate to outsiders and in long stretches, the film gets slow and clunky.

The first half wobbles precariously as the script struggles to find a momentum. But thankfully the narrative flows better in the latter half and culminates in a satisfying, bittersweet end. Luck by Chance is a perceptive portrait of our dream factory. I recommend that you make time for it.

luck by chance is very honest film.....i m so glad some one dared to make a film like tht....but at the end everything happens in the showbizz was well justified....many a times ur left with no options....the end of the film was just perfect...this is wht i call "realistic cinema". its a must watch film......people who understand film making will realise in the end tht the film was not slow at all.....coz one feels tht way as the movie goes haywire 2 touch a lot of othr issues but comes back to konkana...and in the end u see wht was the exact point she wanted 2 make....one more thing...second half is not repitative .....if u understand the directors pov then u knw tht she tried 2 be honest....charcaters dont change nd they always continue with the same behavior...plus thr r many scenes tht add on to their personality...like the one whr neena talks abt her past or the success celebration.... its a dark film....u laugh and giggle at something thts so rediculous and cheap....and then u feel uncomfortable....film at many instances leave u feeling weired subconciously...eg. when nikki seduces vikram or when he confronts sona....many a times u feel the film is predictable...coz u knw a lot of facts...and wht she is showing is reality....plus at times she goes so real tht we feel tht the film is 2 dark... we thought sona would confront vikram but she doesnt. u think sona will go back 2 vikram but she tells him..."tumhari galti nahi hai, kuchj log aisi hi hote hai". and then the bitter sweet end.... this film also talks abt the hope....and tell each nd every artist...who r still in this field doing small/big work...tht be proud...atleast ur doing wht u like doing...atleast u enjoy ur work...how many of us actually can say tht..... reminds me of fountain head... indeed an honest piece of art... hope ppl go to the theatres nd make it a hit...so tht many othrs can dare 2 make honest films like tht... good luck

its very strange, the film starts with a producer asking sexual favour from konkana and as the film progresses we are made to feel that konkana and the producer are friends and nothing has happened between them, and in the end konkana's justification of not joining with aktar back was too weak and forced. She turns him down saying that he is selfish and thinks only about him, but the irony is she is accussing him that he is notting thinking about her, is she not selfish to think that way.. otherwise the film good watching, nice knot, good attempt..

I am really surprised. Such a beautiful review does not attract any comments from surfers. I liked the review more than the film.

good movie worth a watch..

Its a good movie, there is no doubt about that. But to be a great movie, the characters have to tug at your emotions. That I feel is where the first time directer loses the plot a little. Farhans character's struggle is too upmarket to really sound a chord. The only humiliation he suffers is when his friend and he fight. The randomness of anyone and everyone heaping humiliation at new comers is not shown at all. Haven't we grown up on tales of the comments that various producers made about Amitabh Bachans height, voice, face, colour etc. But all in all the movie is definitely watchable.

This movie is a big dissapointment.Avoid it.

I watched it last night..very nice work by Akhtar siblings. It motivates you a lot (typical Farhan Akhtar stuff) while showing the insides of Bollywood. But beware, people who just want to see fun and like keeping their minds at whom when going for a movie might not like it.

Well.. to start off i thought luck by chance would be another "food for thought" kind of a movie.. but the movie is a big disappointment as the movie lacks a good story it looks like a documentry on bollywood

This is really watchable movie, made with good senses.Like zoya's brother Frahan do. So same sensiblity and honesty has been put into tht, music is accordng to movie. Strength of the movie is Performances of every actor is comnmendable, everyperson perfectle fitted. 4/5 from me. Go and watch.

Will go and see it. However from the reviews so far found I can't see it tackles the matter of the casting couch...when will a film be made portraying the brutal reality that 99% of the actors (and models) have to go through casting couch in Bollywood in order to become successful and at the top? RGV in Main Madhuri Dixit.... didn't tackle it. It was mentioned in Page 3 and Jigyaasa, however ignored in Fashion. Will anyone ever be brave enough to show the real face of our glittering film industry?
