Dev D
Cast: Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Mahi Gill, Parakh Mada
Director: Anurag Kashyap
Producer: Ronnie Screwvala

Anurag Kashyap and Devdas are a match made in celluloid heaven. The first is a filmmaker known for deeply disturbing angst-ridden films. The second is Indian cinema’s iconic tragic hero.

Anurag, who has never shied away from dark material, was seemingly the perfect candidate to give Devdas a contemporary twist. But sadly, this marriage is not as magical as it should have been.

Dev D, the 13th film to be made on Sarat Chandra’s 1917 novel, relocates Devdas to Punjab and New Delhi. Dev, played by Abhay Deol, is the spoilt son of a rich landowner. Paro, played superbly by Mahi Gill, is the daughter of their manager. The two nurture a smoldering love from childhood into adulthood. But this love is thwarted, thankfully not by a glaring patriarch, but by a series of misunderstandings.

Paro marries someone else and Devdas embarks on a downward spiral of alcohol, and since this is 2009, cocaine and ecstasy.

In New Delhi’s Paharganj area, he also finds a quantum of solace in the arms of Chanda, played by Kalki Koechlin, a coke-snorting prostitute who is a college student in the daytime.

The first half of Dev D has a ferocious momentum and emotion. Anurag perfectly weaves the explosive passions between Dev and Paro; the contradictions of rural Punjab and the inevitable tragedy that befalls the lovers.

Amit Trivedi’s propulsive soundtrack fuels the narrative. My absolute favourite moment: The Harish Band, manned by two Elvis Presley look-alikes, belting out Emotional Atyachar as Paro gets married and Devdas drinks himself to puking point.

Of course, the challenge of Devdas is creating poetry out of his pathetic, self-destruction. Bimal Roy and Dilip Kumar pulled it off with an austere naturalism. Sanjay Bhansali and Shah Rukh Khan went for spectacle and style. Anurag pays homage to these previous avatars – Paro and Chanda have a fleeting interaction in a train echoing Roy’s Devdas in which the two women cross each other.

Dev D’s prostitute loves watching Bhansali’s Devdas and takes her working name Chanda from Chandramukhi. At one point, we also see a poster of Shah Rukh Khan from the film in a bar.

But the echoes end there. Anurag’s Devdas operates in a psychedelic space. Here Chunnilal is a pimp, Chanda is a prostitute in a lurid baby-doll get-up and the primary activity is imbibing illegal substances.

This is where Dev D stumbles. The momentum of the first half dissipates. As Dev implodes, he emotionally disconnects from the world. But the trouble is that we also emotionally disconnect from him. Despite Abhay’s superlative performance, Dev’s suffering leaves us cold.
The second half also puts too much strain on Kalki who is an intriguing actor but perhaps not experienced enough to pull off the complexity of her character. The last hour becomes a blur of
repetitive images of Deol smoking, drinking and passing out but what stays with you, once again, is the soundtrack.

Dev D is ambitious and brave but it’s also frustratingly inconsistent. I’m going with two and a half out of five stars and recommending it with reservations.

Go armed with an open mind and patience.

Dev's Reincarnation When we go to watch a movie which is completely or partially or for this flick "loosely" based on Sarat Chandra's "Devdas", we carry a basic idea of how the plot would be. And the characters as well. And, this is where Dev D scores as well as falters. It scores because it is a completely new & wild yet a practical take on Devdas set on today's pace. But our typical mass audience tries to find out the masala that they have seen over these years in the earlier versions of Devdas. The movies starts with a bang and ends the same way. First 50 minutes where Dev and Paro are depicted is quite pacy and gripping as well. Then the modern Chanda is introduced who belongs to a posh family in New Delhi. The next 30 minutes till intermission is slow (not for the masses). Second half is again fun & carries on till end. Abhay finally proves that he is here stay and I give him more credits as this concept is his idea. Mahi (Paro) and Kalki (Chanda) are decent and tolerable. Technically the movie is good. Be it the cinematography or the editing or screenplay. Pluses: Abhay, Music, and Anurag's direction. Minuses: Could have used those slow pace (in between) more interesting.

the first devdas to show devdas as the spoilt looser that he was, rather than glrifying him. excellent movie

Amazing Movie, one of the few hindi movies that makes you think and actually is real enough that you don't feel disconnected. I would like to tell all the people who compare it with Devdas that they need to move on, this movie is much better than a 3 hour long over-the-top tear jerker that explains nothing about relationships like this movie does ! A must watch !

u can c the vast difference in rating give nby the various critics. They really piss. Anoupama what happened to u, let me tell u its a great movie,u gave 2.5 whereas nikhat kazmi gave 5. its better than people like u should keep your opinion upto u only .Ur opinion is not worth even a paisa. Everybody to understand that critics are really biased and on the payroll of srk. They give 3 star to a movie like OSO and 2.5 to Dev D. Man they are really useless.

A different take on the classical Devdas story. Bold attempt by Anurag to potray the actual feelings of Devdas, which otherwise we like to hide because of society. Good acting by Abhay Deol and movie also has few cool tracks. I would give 3 out of 5 rating for the movie.

and the best part of this Modern Devdas is the guy finally moved on, this will inspire so many youngsters to come out of some emotional trauma (if they are in). He did not die like the original character which was very sad. Guys don't miss it...

Hi, Dev D is probably the most intelligent Hindi movie I have seen. The director tries to portray the hypocrisy in Dev's character by reflecting that he does not miss Paro coz he loved her, he misses the idea of being in love with her. This is a brave but true reflection of failed relationships which no other director would dare to show. Hats off to Anurag.

a brilliant piece of work by anurag kashyap.a must watch for all.so much of extraordinary use of techniques with so much of ease. no point comparing dev d with devdas.its a story of almost every second guy around today. good class of acting by abhay deol as ever. amit trivedi is too good a composer.every song is different from the other.great quality of music produced.must keep it up.

I saw it cos it featured Abhay Deol and I wasn't disappointed. Plus the music score is superb too.

First of all, it's not a Devdas...so it's completely unfair to compare this to any previous effort of picturising the classic from Sharatchandra. And hence one should not expect Anurag to portray Dev's agony in a way that would leave the audience soft-eyed.It's a radical, bold effort to portray human sexuality(yes its about human and not only women)through a story that is loosely based on the classic.Hats off to Anurag for his attempt...this movie talks about the real inner 'us'..., which we prefer to be silent about otherwise. A must watch...don't miss it !

a radical, dark n unapologetic portrayal of love, sexuality and addiction...kinda gets repetitive in second half but still a rivetting watch...

Its a visual treat ...what a radical change and breath taking refresher from conventional flicks. i definitely agree kashyap and devdas are a match made on cellulid heaven. he finds his rhythm after no smoking but the power is delivered by in my view by abhay's yet another winning-ur-heart non mainstream act and ofcourse the amazing soundtrack delivered by amit trivedi whther it be the angry rock version of emotional aatychar or the soothing and classical payaliya....DEV D ROCKS!!!!

Yar is totallyBkwas movie i dnt knw wat anurag want to show i this movie.by making movie with some interseting name is not mean you did some creativity ..

This psychedelic drama surely goes over the top. Lack of coherence is somewhat balanced by the experimental tracks but ends in chaos. my rating would be Two out of five. Watch if you like what others don't.

The movie was some kind of a rollercoaster ride..that I thoroughly enjoyed. Just love abhay deol..he was too good..

Posted by:  Durgesh ]
Loved the movie. Very unconventional treatment of a 90 year old story.

Posted by:  KK ]
Dev D is an awesome movie, wherein you really get off the old typical Devdas stories and also keeps you popped up for the entire 2 hours 15 mins.......Must watch movie........4.5 / 5 stars

Here is my own review of Dev D.... We all know that Dev Das is one of the most boring characters of Indian literature history, but still managed to get three versions, more than any other movie in India. There is not much to choose between all three on them apart from the actors who played Dev Das felt that they have given the most hunting performance of their lives (K.L. Sehgal, Dilip Kumar and SRK). The only evolution was the sets and production value and glamour quotient. Than two crazy man (Abhay and Anurag) came together to give us the fourth instalment of this over hyped franchisee the one last treatment before it gets buried in the history for ever. Concept: Story remains the same as we are all familiar that Dev Das was the pain in his own A**. But the setting is new age and floats between Delhi and Punjab. I have lived in Delhi for all my life and never seen it the way Anurag captures it. Dariya Gunj is an amazing place which has many layers to it and hides much more than what it shows. Cast and Acting: Every character has been chosen to perfection. Right from Dev, Paaro, Chanda to Chunni and other supporting characters in the movie. Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Mahie Gill.. all of them impress beyond believe. Best being Mahie who shows the true portrayal to of a woman who is desperate to have sex with love but same time has a doggy past but still loves Dev like anything. Chanda played by Kalki plays a prostitute that we have never seen before. She is very loveable and free spirited in the movie and loves Dev unconditionally. Chunni is superb as a pimp who is Dev’s best friend in the lonely by lanes of Delhi. But the best one is by far is Abhay Deol, he plays Dev with such conviction that you start feeling for him and wonder if will ever find his true love (in spite of knowing the story line). Best cast assembled in a long time for an offbeat movie like Dev D. Direction, narration and editing: When I saw Black Friday, Paanch and No Smoking, I just knew

Abhay deol has been taking good films of late. go watch the movie

Posted by:  Amrit ]
Dev D..is super;all the actors have done exceedingly well..it's sacrilegious to compare this to Bimal Roy's magnum opus..this attempt is novel, and treated in a different style..and is no less entertaining and thought-provoking..Dev D is absolutely superb..

The movie is superbbb and i found your review inconsistent. This is a bold attempt by anurag and fantastic performance by Abhy(man he has come of age n has now long list of superlative performance) and the two girls look brilliant in the film. the best part is no cliches are used and is a bold attempt to potray a story so old yet so relative in every era. Fantastic music gr8 performance and something totally different cinema from Bollywood. 5 on 5 for the effort and performance Go watch otherwise you will miss SALLI KHUSHI!!!!!
