Gulaal
Cast: Deepak Dobriyal, Kay Kay Menon, Abhimanyu Shekhar
Music: Piyush Mishra
Director: Anurag Kashyap
Writer: Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap is Bollywood’s poet of discontent. He is the anti-Yash Chopra. Anurag has never filmed a love that does not sour or a laugh that does not curdle. His cinema—passionate, fiery and nearly always indulgent—lays bare the ugliness in our souls.

In Gulaal Anurag takes Sahir Ludhianvi’s haunting lyrics Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye toh kya from Guru Dutt’s Pyasaa and weaves a narrative around it.

Gulaal is set in Rajpur, a fictional city in Rajasthan. The plot is set into motion by Duki Bana, played by Kay Kay Menon, a member of the royal family who spearheads a secessionist movement, hoping to create a new Rajputana. With some Machiavellian moves, key murders and election-rigging, Duki Bana manages to plant his man in the local law college elections but the mild-mannered spectacled Dilip Singh, played by Raja Chaudhary, turns out to be less pliant than Duki Bana imagined.

In Gulaal, Anurag, who also co-wrote the film, weaves an intricate tale of deceit, desire, corruption, the loss of innocence and the perversion of idealism. For the first hour, the film crackles with energy, most of it emanating from actor Abhimanyu Singh, who plays Dilip’s fiery roommate Ransa. Ransa, all balls and attitude, is an elemental life force. When he dies, Gulaal goes limp.

Anurag’s films are always a sensory overload. Like in Dev D, the colors, sounds and images dazzle but the trouble is that the prodigiously talented director just doesn’t know when to stop.

So for interminable stretches, the narrative wanders along aimlessly through more murders, an abortion, angst and tears. A fatal flaw is Dilip Singh’s character, which never comes as fully alive as Ransa or Dukki Bana or even Duki Bana’s lieutenant Bhatti, played nicely by Deepak Dobriyal. Singh’s tragedy doesn’t sear us as deeply as it should.

Eventually then, Gulaal is inconsistent and exhausting but I recommend that you see it for its terrific performances and Anurag’s vast but unrealized ambitions.

Anurag’s films never elicit a one-word response, which is a compliment to the director. Go and have patience.

Mr Kashyap is an over-rated film maker. With Gulaal flopping, people have realised that there is nothing in his movies. But he will remain a favourite of reviewers. Every time they say the film is worth watching, remember that it means: stay away.

superb movie.its a must-watch!best film of the year till date.its 100 times better than those popular-award winning romantic stuff with big starcasts.its a sad thing that films like gulaal or black friday dosent get much exposure.anurag dares to be different.KK menon as usual was outstanding. All the artists did a great job.BRAVO ANURAG !!

Gulaal...is a coming off age direction by Anurag basu...i completely disagree with the NDTV critic ...calling it a movie whr u need patience...i think it's a gripping movie with some excellent performances by actors...it is a hard hitting movie....One thing which stood out was the awesome music and lyrics by piyush mishra...they were too good...GULAAL IS MUCH BETTER THAN DEV D.......GO watch it..its a collectors item with path breaking direction..

worth watching once...good first half but slow in second half,Abhimanyu singh brings so much energy to his character as Ransa,KK is outstanding as usual, climax leaves many questions unanswered...but i think Anurag kashyap can only get get better considering Gulal is under production for quite a long time now and we all saw Dev D which was filmed after Gulal

gulaal is great work from anurag kashyap, better than devd since it is an original piece of work.

oustanding star cast, incredible performances ...can sometimes could not make a film interesting without the consistency of the story line and content.

Gulaal puts light on issues which exsist but have never before been put out in the lime light, take for example the dark side of student politics in our country or be it the sense of betrayal by the government that exists amongst the community/caste highlighted in the film. All in all the movie is quiet slow but interesting..

First of all, this movie is not for those people who like hero and heroine running around trees and singing songs and a cocktail of song, love, action, comedy...etc. This is a bit out of track movie. So, I will only suggest those people who like theatre should go and watch this movie. People who know what acting is where an actor speaks out many things by just his expressions and eyes and using less amount of dialogues. Amazing work done by everyone, awesome music and lyrics by Piyush Mishra. Its again a masterpiece just like Maqbool. Enjoy....

Though this movie was different from other movies but at the end I couldn't figure out what driector or story writter wanted to convey to viewer. Started with some kind of Rajputana movement then move to student politics and then some kinda love story. I was confused at the end after having built so much expectation. Though I must admit most of the ators has done justice to their characters but directors has not done justice to many chararacters. Kay Kay is one of my favorite actor and that's one of the reason I was waiting for this movie so eagerly. he along with others done great job again.

I so agree that his films never elicit "one-word-response" they are like a large canvass potraying the good the bad and the ugly - all the characters are so real and around us that none of them qualify for a perfect hero - A Paro from Dev D who still loves Dev after her marriage but shares more intimacy with her husband!! Complex yet true - Love his work just for the courage that he has to put on screen what he wants to show - just like a painter using the hues that he chooses to - Cheers for Gulal and Dev D
