Videsh: Heaven on Earth
Cast: Preity Zinta, Vansh Bhardwaj, Deepa Mehta, Yanna M
Director: Deepa Mehta
Producer: Ravi Chopra, David Hamilton

Videsh: Heaven on Earth is a frustrating film. There are scenes here of marital violence that are so effectively horrific that you almost can’t bear to watch.

Preity Zinta, playing Chand, a Punjabi girl who has an arranged marriage with a taxi driver in Canada, gives her career’s best performance. Her haunted and fearful eyes convey the brutality and horror of her situation.

Within days of her marriage, Chand, an endearingly hopeful bride is transformed into a hollow wreck. She becomes a prisoner in her own home. But Videsh strives to show that Chand isn’t the only victim here.

The alienation, loneliness and struggle of working class immigrants factors into the abuse that permeates Chand’s relationship with her husband.

Vansh Bhardwaj, a theater actor, makes a confident debut as the abusive husband and Balinder Johal is superbly effective as the neurotic mother-in-law who is so insecure about losing her only earning son that she interrupts his honeymoon and actually goads him into beating his wife.

When her son viciously slaps Chand while they are still on their honeymoon, the mother advises her weeping daughter-in-law: Ro mat, yeh toh hota hi rehta hai ghar ghrahasti mein.

And yet, despite all of this, Videsh doesn’t quite hang together. The weakest link in the film is a fantasy element, inspired by Girish Karnad’s celebrated play Nagamandala.
Chand is so desperate for her husband’s affections that she takes a magical root from a Jamaican co-worker and mixes it into her husband’s milk, hoping that it will make him fall in love with her. The potion finds its way to a cobra in the backyard instead. The cobra begins to take the shape of a loving version of her husband and begins to visit Chand.

This is perhaps meant to suggest that Chand’s determination to keep her dream alive is so strong that it actually manifests itself as reality and eventually gives her the strength to fight back.

But interweaving folklore into the grim reality of Videsh required deft writing. Mehta, who had earlier made a critically acclaimed documentary on domestic violence among Canadian Indian immigrants and has also written Videsh is unable to make the transition seamless.
With the introduction of the shape-shifting cobra, the film becomes contrived and confused. The sudden shifts into monochrome frames and Chand’s constant muttering to herself only make the story more opaque. The dialogue is clunky and the metaphor too laboured to work.

Eventually then, Videsh is only partially successful. I recommend that you see it for Priety Zinta’s heartfelt performance.

Horrible movie. Not for all. We need narrator like Ravneet to explain the movie

Its a well made movie, close to reality, and about the snake part... its the depressed mind, Change of atmosphe( place), new people , new job and no contact with the ones she was close with, and her husband not supporting her... made her go in a depression where she could only feel happy when she was in her imaginations, there can be some flaws inthe movie, but then i havent yet seen a perfect movie, :) Deepa Mehta has again done a wonderful job . Hope so see some more good movies from her soon,

believe most of the people did not understand the movie. A disaster by Deepa Mehta. And the movie was only for punjabi audience.

didnt understnd 3/4 of the film as its in punjabi...it should have been in english as it was filmed in canada...the trailer looked very interesting on B4U but i was impressed at all with the movie...wasnt breath taking at all...well i agree that it shows a good example of domestic abuses and violence...and it also teaches you a lesson to never get married to sum1 u dnt knw,and certainly not to live wiv ur in-laws or parents after u get married,it only creates troubles in your married life...i seriously hated the mother-in-law...i could have punched her big time,n leave everyfing to go back home... wel anyway... was a waste of time... but i loved preity...she rocked it...even if making love to a snake sounds sooooooo stupid :P

if you dont undrtand the movie thats your headache, but it was indeed a good movie. however its din keep to the xpectations as it is camin from meheta. and really hope people unlike Ravi will not compare this movie wid Paheli. its time that we grow up and educate ourselves about movie and go on to watch good films and not feed on vacuous commercial films.

Theme is really intresting, but this time Deepa Mehta just missed the magic. It's nighter a commercial nor a parallal kind of cinema.Making love with snake by panjabi girl who is victim of marital violence really over the head.Story stared like a real cinema and end with a poor fantasy.

i cannot understand the movie, don;t know why the scenes of actors brushing there teeth are shown in the movie, thank god they didn't spit at the audience....

Its a useless movie only ment for Punjabis. No body else can understand a morsel of the movie. Its theme is a copy of the movie Paheli which was far better than this movie. An utter waste of time. Definately cannot be termed as a bollywood movie. Complete thumbs down for Deepa Mheta.

i watched the film. it is a jouney into the cruel reality of indian so called glamarous and traditional family life. The hypocracy of a united family is shown without any exaggeration and is supported excellently by Priety's perfomance. But again at times the film is unbelievably dead slow... and the twist with the cobra is absolutely unclear... till the film ended i could not make out what connections the man and the cobra had and wat hpnd to the husband Rocky... Deepa Mehta should have some of these aspects simple to understand and appreciate the film. Good work all the same and i would give a 5/10.
