New York
Cast: John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and
Director: Kabir Khan
Producer: Yash Raj Films

Special:New York

Finally a Bollywood blockbuster in the theatres after so long. New York is directed by Kabir Khan, whose last film Kabul Express had simultaneously informed, irritated and amused its audiences.

If that was a rare achievement for a mainstream Bollywood film, New York also manages to intelligently entertain. Set against the backdrop of a post 9/11 America, the film is the story of two young Muslim boys of Indian origin and their girlfriend Maya, played by Katrina Kaif. The three haven't been in touch since college and September 11, 2001, a date that changed the world and their lives.

Many years later, we find out that John's character Sameer, a super-intelligent and athletic American guy, is married to Maya and also has a kid. Usman, played by Neil Nitin Mukesh, is under interrogation by the FBI. It is suspected that Sameer now runs a sleeper terrorist-cell in New York City. The FBI would like to plant Usman as its cover-agent to unearth the terror network. There is no relationship between this and the conspiracy theory film Arlington Road. If anything New York is infinitely better.

Quite clearly these are career-defining roles for the central actors. And I say this because they are not quite the best actors in the world, but nonetheless vaguely surprise you with such sincere performances. No surprises with Irrfan Khan of course. He plays the FBI sleuth with a swagger that could remind you of Al Pacino, no less.

The film shows how the persecution of Muslims after 9-11 was real, even if the persecution complex thereafter was an exaggeration. It's a fairly balanced view on a subject that is easy to get rhetorical about. And we still watch a story unfold with all the masala and drama that you'd associate with commercial cinema.

New York is the kind of cinema that takes Bollywood forward. Also it is one of those rare films where the picture is so much better than a fairly misleading promo. Thankfully an A-list film that gets a straight A after long.

A super natural and brilliant performance by youngsters, no celeb things attached to then, a very intellectual and award winning performance by John and Neil. The movie has a grip which keep you seated and shut. Story line is awesome. Light comedy mixed in the environment.Absolutely worth watching, bollywood has produced something really good with takes it forward. Irfan was amazing as usual. Hats off to director Kabir Khan

Just cause the Hero dies in the end or the movie is made on a sentimental note does not mean that the movie is good. The hero is a one man army and from a nobody he becomes a business tycoon and top terrorist. He heads his own terrorist attacks and can afford to lose or spend millions on his mercy. The best Fbi agent is tryin to convince NNmukesh to become his friend long after the movie is over. Ridiculous. Btw Katrina looks like a beautiful white elephant.

5/10,theme was good but i completely disagree with the climax of the movie .on one hand we have great movie like RANG DE BASANTI which says come forward n change the system but this movie says system can screw you anytime, anywhere n for any silly reason, now, its your fate that you have to tolerate it.so,thats disappointing!!

New York, was pretty amateurish. They have taken bits from last year’s Pakistani film, ‘khuda ke liye’. The film mainly dwells on the after-effects of 9/11 in New York. But the handling of the subject is done in a very Bollywood/masala way. John doesn’t look like he could be in college... to read more please visit http://tamatarfeko.blogspot.com/

i have seen this film. and this film is beautifully oicturised. it force you to think about those who really had faced this. terrorism can not justified for any reason. Katrina and john are looking great together. glad to see katrina with other than akshay kumar who even doesnt suit her. i hope Kat and John will do soem more movies. Neil was also great.

the movie is good one

Movie is highly contrived to prove a point , the same culd have been done more convincingly.

Posted by:  samir ]
very very nice movie.. Must watch for all the Indians...

Seriously? You call this a good moving? A decently good story turned into a bollywood masala film...what a pity!

It is not surprise to see another bright film from Kabir Khan. All the four main stars have done a great job. But I found John bringing something extraordinary to the character of Sameer. He has brought a silence to the character; bringing out the tragedy of his pain in his eyes. his being a dual personna somehow made easy by an inability to feel any pain or pleasure strongly after having been subject to a trauma that was meaningless and inexplicable. Very powerful and moving. I found the pain lingering long after coming out of the movie theatre. Now that's a powerful story well told, and brilliantly brought to life by the actors.

its a good film and the dialogues of the movie must be much stronger then they have.

Bad film.... Stupid Storyline, awful performances, complete waste of money,YRF needs to do something and fast.........

Showed some real facts of the world super power which is definitely super, Nice movie to show the people of all the races that its high time that they understand the destructive effects of terrorism and violence... Nicely presented and directed Seems like Yash Raj Banner finally got on track....

Just one word "awesome". Neil Nitin Mukesh is a revelation.

Posted by:  smitha ]
I completely agree with the review of Mr. Mayank. He has done complete justification to the essence of the movie..

EXCELLENT DIRECTION AND OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES BY JOHN AND NEIL(IRFANS CLASSIC ACTING IS A GIVEN BY NOW.ONLY PROBLEM IS THERE ARE HARDLY ANY SONGS.

Posted by:  Hrishikesh ]
A really good and honest review. Snort .... n ......crisp Movie is really an enjoyable experience

best movie.....so cute katrina and john...

Posted by:  unknown ]
this movie has a message. must watch it.

Posted by:  Sujatha ]
Can we have much simpler review. Not sure if the movie story is complicated or its just that Mayank managed to make it complicated.

Posted by:  COCO ]
i would beg to differ frm this review....i think that the movie was very average and a quientissential masala, commercial movie....i felt (its purely personal) that a sensitive issue of terrorism was rather dealt very callouslly.

Posted by:  Prabal ]
It is a stupid review of a stupid movie. If anyone can beleive that a dunb person like Katrina can act then you are biggest fool in the world. John looks very old. fat and mis-sized eyes, like Lalitha Pawar. Boring and disgusting and meaningless. Kabir Khan is not Ray; he is uneducated fool with big bulbous eyes of a Kideny patient and a bigger mouth but a smaller brain. REJECTED. THRASHED

Katirna I love u a lot.Leave the old man salman khan

I think its ridiculous that you have told the story here itself in the review......

Posted by:  harpal bajwa ]
I loved the movie. A very sensitive issue handled thoroughly by all the main leads. All four have performed to their best. For a change all the songs are backgound score and dont have to bear with the latkas and jhatkas. A great task done by the director.

I have watched NEW YORK today and quite liked it very much. The story is quite eye catching and quite emotional(I cried a lot in this film and this is the 2nd film in which I cried the most after TAARE ZAMEEN PAR).The film depicts how Muslims were treated in New York after 9/11.John has done a perfect job especially near the climax.Katrina has shown us that she can do great acting.Neil does a good job after JOHNY GADDAR and AA DEKHEN ZARA.Irfan is superb as always. The music is good but I'm sad that the song 'Aye Saaye Mere' was not included in the movie bcoz only Hai Junoon and Aye Saaye Mere-I liked the most. The story:- The movie begins with Omar getting arrested for possession of guns that were found on the boot of his car. He is taken into custody and is interrogated by Agent Roshan who demands to know the identity of his suppliers. He inquires about his college friend Sam who Neil insists he hasn't seen for the past seven years. Roshan orders Omar to give him full details on Sam and how they met. The scene flashes back to 1999 when Omar joins New York State University and is taken in tow by Maya, the student counselor. She is friends with Sam and they form a gang. Maya is actually in love with Sam and when Neil comes to know he moves away and hasn't met Sam after that. Roshan orders Neil to meet Sam and Maya again as evidence they have of him and his friends show that he is a terrorist and the FBI wants sufficient proof to arrest him. Neil is forced to agree and goes back into Sam's life and gets to know they're married. Neil pretends to support the ideals of terrorists stating something has to be done to get Sam to open up. He finds no signs of Sam being a terrorist and insists to Roshan that both Sam and himself are innocent. Sam discovers the gun Neil carries (given to him by Roshan) and orders him to get rid of it. In a shooting incident set up by Roshan Neil kills a man not knowing he's not really dead. Sam is furious and orders Neil to get out of his
