Daddy Cool, directed by K Murali Mohan Rao is a frame-to-frame copy of the 2007 British comedy, Death at a Funeral.

The makers - Maruti Pictures have supposedly bought the rights officially but the credits do not reflect this. The credits say: Story and Screenplay by Tushar Hiranandani. Actually all Tushar has just translated the English version to Hindi.

Yes, there are perhaps two or three new elements in Daddy Cool, but those are the worst thing one could think of in this singularly unfunny film.

Daddy Cool is about a funeral where everything on the earth goes wrong.

One character accidentally takes hallucinogenic drugs, strips naked and threatens to commit suicide. The dead man's two sons are fighting their own ego battle. To add to the confusion, the dead man's lover shows up and declares that "Yes, your daddy was gay".

Death at a Funeral was droll, wonderfully enacted and very funny. Daddy Cool on the other hand is excruciating.

It’s a sort of mini-Olympics of bad acting, so you can’t really decide who is more irritating - Kim Sharma as the jealous wife or Sophie Choudhry as the hot model or perhaps Chunky Pandey, who looks as if a small animal has died on his head.

This is a film, in which the best performance comes from, believe it or not, Sunil Shetty.

Daddy Cool is also annoyingly homophobic. So characters routinely mouth lines like: Tum dono ek gay ki aulad ho and an inserted end-twist explains that the gay angle was not so gay after all.

The only good thing about this movie is that it is mercifully short. I’m going with one out of five stars and recommending that you rent Death at a Funeral instead.
