Mr King was diagnosed with diabetes more than 20 years ago.

Angela Moore, the publicist for the King family, confirmed on Wednesday that the artist is now resting at his Las Vegas residence, Efe news agency reported.

Mr King began his musical career in the 1940s and since then has released more than 50 albums.

Among his best-known numbers are Three O'Clock Blues, The Thrill Is Gone and When Love Comes to Town - the latter a collaboration with Irish band U2.

Mr King, considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Last October, Mr King fell ill during one of his concerts in Chicago, also reportedly due to dehydration, and was experiencing symptoms of exhaustion, a condition that forced him to cancel the rest of his tour.
